I didn't mean to start a brawl over Scorsese/Spielberg, lol... For what its worth, I'm a big Scorsese fan (just not so much his post-Aviator work) and I admire Spielberg for what he does, his craftsmanship, but the guy is surrounded by too many "yes" men and he hasn't been able to "end" a movie well for a long, long time. But both had made some of cinema's greatest films, along with Malick IMO.

As with every Malick film, there's some really beautiful imagery in it.

What I saw, I liked more than I thought I would based on every thing I'd read and heard about it. But it still struck me as a lesser version of The Tree of Life. It has the same basic form and narrative style, but the story isn't as engrossing and it doesn't do for the concept of love what Tree of Life did for the exploration of life, death and childhood imo.

There were moments when it felt like a bad Zoolander parody of a Calvin Klein commercial.

I plan to finish the rest of it tonight.
Where do you think the man got his inspiration ?

There has been rumors that he loves that movie as strange as it sounds, here is an article I found that mentions it is apparently confirmed:

Terrence Malicks Zoolander Love Confirmed

I wonder if he liked the sequel though.

Here is the fan made video

That reminds me of an article I read a while ago about Kubrick's supposedly favorite films. Interesting read. I love that Kubrick was apparently a big fan of "White Men Can't Jump".

I read somewhere a few years back that Godard is a big fan of Ghostbusters.

...like he's obsessed with it.

I read that Kurosawa was a huge fan of the Tom Hanks movie "Bachelor Party". Inspired him to end his hiatus after "Kagemusha" and make "Ran".

Tree of Life is great, but Wolf of Wall Street and Hugo are as good.

I've only seen it the once (in the cinema) - I loved TTOL so much more when I watched it a second time, so I hope the same happens with TTW. It helps that it shows in loving detail two of the most beautiful women in the world... and I enjoyed Affleck's performance as the plank puzzlingly loved by both of them

Malick didn't purposely take decades off between previous films. It's always come down to funding. He now has steady funding to get his projects off the ground.

I need this to happen:

Scientists recently grew a chicken embryo with dinosaur legs. We're one step closer to the dinopocalypse!

If you ever see me selling off all of my movies it's because I know something you don't know.

I revisited Jurassic Park not too long ago, by way of the recent existing Blu-ray release. It's interesting to see Samuel L. Jackson's roles in movies before he became "Samuel L. Jackson."

I dont. Way too many more important films and upgrades that need to happen.

You're right about his steady funding now, which certainly plays a part in his output of late. However, respectfully, you're not correct about your first statement. Malick did purposely take the time off that he did between Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line. Funding was not a significant aspect of his hiatus, it was a personal choice, based upon the very little information known about the reasons for the gap. He wrote a lot during the gap, including screenplays, but very little is known about whether he actually wanted to make any films during this time. A small part of my Malick thesis in college dealt with that.

However, the gap between The Thin Red Line and The New World was predominately a financing issue, as Malick intended to make a film about Che Guevara, petitioned by Soderbergh, but the finances collapsed after a year or so and he then obtained financing for The New World.

While I didn't care for Knight of Cups, I'm still an obsessive fan and I personally have no problem with his increased output; I welcome it.

There's always a lot of unknown with Malick. I'm going on others' accounts of his career. From what I gathered he may not have waited two decades to make The Thin Red Line (or another film) if he had the funding lined up.

In any event, I'm glad he's able to get steady backing and follow through on his projects.
