I fell upon a bit of luck today as I took some movies into Newbury Comics to sell. Apparently, someone had come in recently and unloaded a good number of Criterion DVDs. Quiet a few OOP titles were in there. So, I was finally able to pick up copies of "The Harder They Come" and "Spellbound." They stink to high hell of cigarette smoke, but I guess I can live with it.

It's too bad that "The Harder They Come" isn't anamorphic, though, but I'm still happy as sh1t to have found an actual copy in a store. I read a review on Amazon, too, that one of the other more recent releases of this film wasn't anamorphic, either. Does anyone know of a DVD release for this film that is anamorphic?

EDIT: Unfortunately, the disc for "The Harder They Come" skips around 1:05:25 I found out earlier. The video and audio skip from that point until the end of the film. The disc is clean as clean can be, but I tried it on three different players plus my computer drive... all with the same results.

Also, CG... I got in two more Pialat discs from MOC today... "Nous Ne Vieillirons Pas Ensemble" and "Passe ton Bac d'abord." Didn't we converse about the former in the past? Also, got it Antonioni's "Il Grido" and De Sica's "Shoeshine." A good day for me.

As for "The Third Man", even though it's OOP, it can still easily be obtained, as long as you are willing to pay a little extra for it. I found it used at a reasonable deal close to a year ago. The seller made it cheaper since it was missing the booklet, which kinda sucks and I'm hoping I can get replaced, but the important part is the movie.
Yeah, The Third Man can be obtained pretty easily. Just keep an eye out on ebay for it I picked mine up for 50 shipped.

Speaking of "The Harder They Come", I saw Jimmy Cliff perform at a music festival last weekend. He was amazing as always. A living legend who doesn't get nearly the credit he deserves. I know "The Harder They Come" is probably one of the most unlikely Criterion blu-ray upgrades in the collection but it would be worth it just for Jimmy's performance.

My favorites where the inital landing and the beautiful shots of the moon. In addition i enjoyed how they were so happy that they started to show the inner child personalities. I thought that was price less, and of course JFK's speech

@blu-glu, yes and no. Yes, I love the film and no because the quantity of extras pales in comparison to other Criterion Blu-ray releases.

Hey CG...you win another round!

I finally cracked the cellophane on Red Desert this morning and popped it in.

I can now understand why it's been described as, "a hard film to synopsize", but "a film that takes you on a ride and you may not understand some of the symbolism, but you are enjoying the ride, just the same..."

It was a great film and visually was more perfect, than I first thought it would be. Wonderfully framed shots, great and interesting use of color and all done with a very European sense about it.

I can see why Godard has listed Antonioni as a big influence on his style. He reminds me a bit like Godard, but with a big Kubrick like use of framing shots and how he keeps even depressing industrial landscape shots, very interesting to watch.

I've moved up "Dillenger Is Dead" on my rental list to #2...still waiting on "Pandora and the Flying Dutchman", as there is a short wait.

rkish, I finally got to my copy of Dillinger last night and was very surprised at my impressions after I viewed it. IMO, it had a little drag to it at times and was a little 'artsy' for a while, but the payoff in the last 15 minutes is well worth it. A must see.

this is nothing more than my own opinion, but I'd be surprised if we didn't see at least one Bergman a year from Criterion. The only rumored title in the pipeline at the moment (listed as a 'Unofficial Possibilities' on the Criterion Forum):

Bergman, Ingmar - FARODOKUMENT 69/79 ("checking into these") (Last Update: 12/09)

I'd guess 'Wild Strawberries' before the end of 2011, for what that's worth.

I'm definitely looking forward to Charade. I own the (Criterion) DVD, so this will be a double dip, but I really like the movie. I don't care too much about the extras, but I would like to find it on sale since I do already have the DVD and there are so many other movies coming out in Sept. and Oct.
