I subscribe to Hulu Plus just for the Criterion Collection. With over 800 titles on Hulu, there's no way I would ever buy them all. Even though the Criterion Collection films and extras are the only thing I watch on Hulu, it's still totally worth it to me.

Yes and they're getting motion pictures, too. They've bought Woody Allen's Cafe Society and will make it available to Prime subscribers after it leaves the theater.

I expect them to purchase more films. They've obviously got deep pockets and respect the artists. Win-win for everyone.

Sorry, I read your whole post and wasn't trying to discount your other benefits, I was just quoting the portion that dealt directly with my comment.

I'm cool with people enjoying Prime, but I order from Amazon all the time and have never paid them a dime for shipping, prime subscription or otherwise.

These days I probably order more from AmazonUK/JP/DE etc than US Amazon since most of my Criterions come from Criterion.com or B&N, I don't buy a ton of other domestic blus. Do people around here regularly order their Criterions from Amazon?

Most of mine did until Amazon hiked their free shipping up to a $49 minimum. Now I'll just wait for the sales at B&N and Criterion.com.

I Never order Criterions from Amazon, as you I always use Criterion.com mostly and B&N sometimes, I think once from TCM too.

I do use Amazon UK along with Base and Eureka direct for all the BFI, MoC and Arrow stuff though.

I don't, but occasionally I'll pre-order a Criterion from Amazon if it's one I really want (such as In a Lonely Place) or it's sale priced, bringing it within a buck or two of B&N or Criterion sale prices. Most of my Criterions have been purchased from those two sources; but for the rest of my collection, I would guesstimate that at least 2/3 have been purchased through Amazon.

I usually only order from Amazon when I get a gift card for my birthday or Christmas, and I generally use them for Kino Classics stuff because I always get the nice slipcover from them. The last Criterion I ordered from Amazon was over two years ago. The B&N Criterion sale + coupon is such a good deal, I can usually wait

I would, but it depends on one's idea of what is or isn't science fiction.

Back at the tail end of the summer of 1977, I attended the World Science Fiction Convention in Miami Beach. There was a panel about the latest bunch of genre movie releases -- which of course included Star Wars as well as then-upcoming ones like Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

One of the panelists was SF writer Jack Williamson, who was then and still is now, considered one of SF's "grandmasters". He had been writing and selling SF stories since the late 20s. During the panel, Williamson said (not an exact quote, but close enough), "Star Wars is exactly the kind of science fiction that I've been reading and writing for the past 50 years."

I figure if Jack Williamson doesn't know what science fiction is or isn't, then nobody does.

I can just picture it. But for now, it's only a dream.

Amazon Prime was good for me when I had them for a free 30 day trial. I ordered stuff during the holiday season when stuff was reasonably priced, watched the Paradise Lost documentary films and cancelled it on the 29th day.

I haven't paid over $20 for a standard CC Blu release since the time when I first started collecting and didn't know bette, so their "pre-order and lock in" program stinks too, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm a bit more patient, I think, than others though so I don't mind waiting. Bicycle Thieves and A Brighter Summer Day have got me the most excited since Apu and I haven't even thought about buying them yet.

I had a few days off before starting a new job recently and I put a small dent in my unwatched stack and then proceeded to buy like 10 more films the week after. Never at a loss for movies to watch w/ the library, Netflix, and DVD and Blu-ray collections.

Bwdowiak makes an excellent point. Free Amazon Prime trials are pretty enjoyable. I get, and use, one each year. The best part is you get the prime shipping on whatever you order when you have the trial regardless of when it releases or ships, so I was always pre-order anything and everything I might want before it ends.

Amazon.com has delayed my shipment of Chungking Express and the projected date is now April 13.

They also split the order, so that I'll be getting The City of the Dead in a few days, because it's "Preparing for Shipment."

They also went ahead and mailed me the trashy 1970s exploitation movies that I ordered before then (Bonnie's Kids/The Centerfold Girls, The Roommates/A Woman for All Men), as well as my film noir, The Red House. All of these Blu-rays arrived today, so I'm glad that Amazon is not holding them hostage anymore while they wait for the shipment (or imaginary shipment) of Chungking Express.

I ordered six Criterion blus from Amazon in March with the reduced prices. All of them cost me $21.99. I will occasionally buy others during the year if the price is right. Free shipping makes it a better deal (I know it's not "free", as I pay $100 for Prime, but as many orders as I put in over a year's time, I more than make up for that cost). My big orders are usually reserved for Barnes & Noble or Criterion's Flash Sale. When B&N does their sale in July, I'll hit them like Mike Tyson in his prime.

So, how are you keeping all your Criterion purchases below $20? Do you do all your buying during the big sales?

I just spoke with an Amazon rep via live chat, and they assured me that the movie would be sent, though I didn't inquire as to the shipping date, since it shows my delivery between the 11th and 13th. They seemed absolutely certain. So, we'll see.

I buy from eBay, B&N during sale time and Rakuten.com. That last one is my big secret although the well has run dry a bit.

They have a "super points" program in which they'll offer up to 20% back in pts on purchases. During the last year or so, they've only done it on like a couple days, but they used to do it like once a month. They also give a you a quarter when you review your purchase, a quarter when you review a product, and an extra 3% when you purchase on their site w/ their credit card.

They also do something like $15 off $75 w/ Visa Checkout and give $5 in free pts like twice a year.

So all you used to have to do is get started... I bought some protein powder or something and got $15 off $75 and 15% back. Now if you only buy when they are giving extra bonus pts back, it's almost a never ending well of discounts - use $5 in pts to get yr purchase to $19 and get $4.05 back in pts.

Nobody EVER has blinked an eye at what Rakuten does, but over the last few years I've bought Criterion blus from them from anywhere from $10 to maybe $16 or $18 at highest.

Same here- If Hulu ever drops Criterion then I will be promptly dropping Hulu.

I've heard of that site, but never about those kind of promotions and specially nothing regarding Criterions, will have to check out.

I personally do keep all my Criterion purchases under $20 waiting for big sales, just big orders since I am patient too, that's why I feel hard to justify to pay $20 or more for other label releases, since Criterion seems to be the gold standard.

Another way to get cashback I used is eBates although it doesn't work with every retailer(but most major ones) it's still something extra, specially if you have many people to play the 'refer a friend' bonus thing.
