I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the different between the first and second printing of the Dressed To Kill release was. I looked around but nothing really stood out that was different.

For the first 20 minutes of the film, the picture was fine. When Kate leaves the museum to go after the man, the picture is slightly squeezed vertically, and is like that for the rest of the film. The main problem of this occurring was that people and faces now appeared taller and thinner than they would, and also slightly screwed up the composition of the framing a little.

Yes, you should be able to get the second printing.
And if you are saying that you haven't seen the film before, you have been missing out on a fair bit.

I saw a few comments some days (or weeks) ago about Hard to be a God and decided to check it out on Netflix even if it was marked as 2 stars based on my taste.

Man that Netflix algorithm does seem to work, I couldn't understand why someone would love that, is like if Marketa Lazarova was even more confusing with less plot points to grab on to, or like Andrei Rublev without any of it's great scenes, both of those I actually liked.

Even some critics that liked it mention it is a kind of endurance test, I almost failed it, but I don't like to leave movies unfinished, I mean even if it was well shot it's still no I am Cuba or (insert Lubezki film), or even those previous titles I mention in terms of cinematography.

Did anyone else watched it?

I blind-bought a copy of the Blu-ray (I'm a fan of the Strugatski Brothers, and liked their novel) but haven't watched it yet. There's an earlier film version, but I haven't seen it.

For what it's worth, another of the Strugatskis' novels, Roadside Picnic was filmed by Andrei Tarkovsky as Stalker. They even wrote the screenplay.

Casablanca would make my top 10, too!
Shop around. I purchased this one new in Feb. for $32.60 including shipping.

Does anyone's movie watching lead to reading relevant books? Any Criterions lead you to books covering the films/subject matter?

Costa-Gavras' Missing really struck a chord with me a couple of weeks ago. I received the book, "The Execution of Charles Horman", from eBay today so I can read more about what prompted the film. It's a fascinating story.

I've been on more of a movie kick lately and haven't been reading as much. But, I'm currently reading "All the President's Men" after watching Spotlight. I'm also looking for a good Orson Welles biography for my upcoming vacation.

I liked that novel but from what I remember it was quite different than the movie, the film was quite challenging and I don't think I got out of it the same as the book, but I want to see it again, does anybody know who has the rights for it on the uS? is it Kino? or is it candidate for Criterion?

Edit: I just found it is Kino, at least their dvd is still in print.

In my case other than reading the books of which several films are based on, is books with more information on directors I like, but not many and so far I have only read one fully: Objects of Desire: Conversations With Luis Bunuel where he talks about all his movies one by one, it is a good companion to watching his filmography.

There a lot of books on Welles out there. In addition to Barbara Leaming's authorized biography, there is Simon Callow's 3/4 complete 4-volume biography, Peter Bogdonavich's "This is Orson Welles", and perhaps most entertaining, Henry Jaglom's (yes, that Henry Jaglom) "My Lunches with Orson" where Welles dishes the dirt while sticking Jaglom with the check over a series of lunches.

I've only read the Jaglom, but I plan to pick up the Leaming.

The Welles book is a good read. I have a signed copy. I remember Peter B telling my brother and I he was shocked we found it in stores.

Has anyone read "My Lunches with Orson: Conversations between Henry Jaglom and Orson Welles" by Peter Biskind? I got it as a gift a few years ago but haven't read it yet.

I read Buchan's The 39 Steps and Greenmantle after watching the Hitchcock film. Hal Ashby's screen adaptation of Being There led me to seek out Kosinski's book. I also got into Hammett and Chandler novels because of how impressed I was with the dialogue in The Big Sleep the first time I saw it.

There are several biographies I've checked out as well because the artist's entire body of work picqued my interest, like Kurosawa's Something Like an Autobiography, or the excellent Spencer Tracy book by James Curtis.

I've read all of those, bar the Leaming and the latest volume of the Callow series. I'd recommend them all. The Callow ones are particularly well-detailed, but my favourite is This Is Orson Welles, which is the closest thing we have to an autobiography from him.
