I am aware of that. That's why I said "lock, stock, and barrel" -- they'd be ridding themselves of what they obviously feel is an albatross.

As for the last part of your response, that's why I said "Assuming that they could find someone willing and able to fork over whatever Warner asked for it."

Lubezki would have been nine years old when Badlands was released.

What's your point? He supervised the BD, and Malick approved it. Clearly those two , who have a history together, know more about what one wants from the other more than some random Internet forum member.

McCabe had a nice murky brown look to it, and I hope they don't clean it up too much like they did with Heaven's Gate because it will lose its unique atmosphere.
We are fortunate that Vilmos Zsigmond gave them some instruction before he passed away, when he was at Criterion to work on the release of The Rose. They might've even recorded an interview for McCabe which will be a part of the bonus material.

I don't think this comment is fair... he has an opinion and he is entitled to it - I agree the original looks much nicer to be honest, but as said before on here you cant really judge a film on a screenshot.

Both are great looks so either way I am happy. But he is entitled to challenge and question the decision, I mean Lubezki is still human and humans do bak mistakes, even with so much experience. Lubezki may prefer the colour grading he chose, but others can disagree with him - only fair lol.

I'm clearly not above calling out directors for revisionism (e.g. see Cronenberg's Scanners thread), I just want to know the basis for such claims. A lot of people use the DVD as some sort of yardstick for what a BD should look like, and that's definitely not an accurate measure of things many times. It should be noted, that Lubezki wasn't even the one to color the BD transfer, it was another person who Malick has worked with over many films. I like both as well, but I do think the first looks a little too hot

The New World and McCabe and Mrs. Miller are confirmed releases. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls was hinted in the 2016 New Years newsletter.

Regarding Criterion announcements, please put spoiler tags on any "new pages" posts created here, for the benefit of those who don't want to peek in the closet before Christmas

But the original color is not an opinion, it's a fact. It can be his opinion that it's wrong, but that also can be either proven or disproven, so that's not an opinion either. The only "opinion" here is whether or not he likes it, but he's arguing his opinion as fact, that it was definitely wrong.

When memory fades away as can colors on film stock, and that light bulbs from the projector can have its impact, and that nobody here has a 100% reference to compare the DVD and BD with, it's hard not to read any comment (being pro or against one of them) as a personal appreciation.

I must have watched McCabe & Mrs. Miller a hundred times in the theater. I missed the first-run, but I pursued it relentlessly in repertory theaters throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The Long Goodbye, too, although I did see that several times in 1973. There is a kind of ebullience and ambiance to the light that, to me anyhow, was Zsigmond's signature. The Long Goodbye blu-ray flattens the light and spins the color. It looks wrong. Anyone who says it's right doesn't know the film. I hope Criterion gets McCabe & Mrs. Miller right. It looks like no other film ever made. It's tricky to get right because Zsigmond's combination of filters during capture and adjustments in the lab is hard to duplicate, especially when hi-def scanning sees right through some filters as if they weren't there.

I have no stake in this debate other than to verify that the top capture resembles what I saw in the theater many times and the bottom capture doesn't. As someone who studies films from a technical perspective and who has shot film and worked in the lab to time footage the way I wanted it, I'm prone to remember what I see.
