Well, it looks like you'd have to keep the DVD anyway, for the "Director's Cut" of the film. I may be missing something, but they didn't mention that in the description of the new release.

I'd heard a lot about the film, but hadn't seen it until I bought the Criterion DVD. It wasn't terrible by any means, but I did find it rather dull.

I am seeing M83 myself! In June! It will be the first time for me. I hear his new album isn't so great but I'm going to take a listen to it anyway.

Anyone notice Carnival of Souls is missing the director's cut that was on disc 2 of the old DVD? I assume its an issue with the elements, but I'm surprised the SD version isn't listed as an extra, although it says "More!".

I am just relieved that we finally got some upgrades

Looks like they are trying to use new 2K or 4K restorations for all their releases for quite some time, the only exceptions this year are The Emigrants/The New Land, The Naked Island and Bitter Rice which doesn't mean they are not good, but might be old enough (maybe from dvd days) when they weren't labeled like that.

I understand it is the more sensible decision to relegate some of their old releases until they have the highest quality source possible since there is always the possibility of a new restoration happening if you put out an older master too soon like it happened with Late Spring.

Also I always wondered why if they have more films in their pipeline than what they can work with, they decided to expand to the UK if they could have used those resources to actually hire more people and increase their output here, I guess since they will be the same releases it doesn't require that much extra work compared to doing a completely new release from scratch, there is also the possibility that increasing their output would not necessarily get them the same % of profit increase since all would be targeted to the same collectors, at some point we would end up with no more money .

Pencil me in as well for The New World and Muriel, or The Time of Return (another movie with Delphine Seyrig...woo hoo!).

I'm intrigued by A Touch of Zen and The In-Laws.
The In-Laws is just such a joyful comedy. So much fun and Falk and Arkin are one of the great odd couples. You're in for a treat, Owl.

I hope it's included as a "more".

I didn't realize The New World release was including 3 cuts of the film - thought it was just 2?

The criterion release includes:

The 150 minute cut that was shown to critics and guild members for one week (Christmas-New Years) in New York and LA on 2 screens in each city.

The 135 minute cut that was for general theatrical release.

And the 172 min cut that was released as a Special Edition on DVD, and later released on BD.

The site is going down. If it never comes back I love you all lol.

Also everyone should buy The New World. It's a brilliant piece. Study the camera angles how much has been swiped from it since... Plus the back stories are epic. Chris Plummer trashing Malick after because his speeches got cut out by the score etc (self-important much?)

See you on the other side of the Criterion rainbow where all spines have new 4k transfers and every day is 50% off at B&N.

2 hrs ago I offered to sell all of my OOP Criterions on here for $50. I had no takers so I guess I'll just keep them.

Justin, you know we have a great bromance. The site is back, I'm happy to report.

Things got a bit dusty here though.

Where are those Swiffer wipes?

And you're right about The New World. "Brilliant" is just the beginning of what that movie is about. It's one of my 10 desert island movies for sure.
