•Decakolog 5 (Thou shalt not kill) and 6 (Thou shalt not commit adultery) by Krzysztof Kieślowski (1989, 57mn et 58mn, Poland). A presentation of MK2 and TVP. Restoration in 2K from original image negatives by TVP in Poland. The color-grading of each episode has been supervised by the DOPs of the episode they photographed.

Criterion has confirmed at one of their Wexner conferences that they are indeed working on a release of The Decalogue.

I was out at Barnes and Noble today taking a quick stroll down Criterion Avenue and I happened to notice an older gentleman standing in line waiting to make a purchase. He was holding blu-ray copies of My Dinner With Andre...and Salo.

He was an erudite looking man who was probably in his late 60s, maybe even 70s. He was wearing corduroy pants, a brown v-neck sweater, a black leather jacket and one of those herringbone tweed caps.

...a bourgeois professor of English Literature type.

Why would a man like that want to watch a film like Salo? Not just watch it, but own it.

I had to see, I had to know.

I casually mentioned that I thought it was an interesting choice, given the subject matter. He asked me if I had seen it and I said no, I only knew it by reputation...that I had heard the stories and the rumors...of scatological incidents and rapes and various means of sexual torture and other scenes of this nature.

He nodded his head, furrowed his brow ever so slightly and cracked what I can only describe as an insidiously disturbing, childlike grin. I won't go so far as to say the Jack Nicholson gif from Anger Management...it was much more subtle than that.

"A marvelous piece of work," he said.

It sent shivers down the back of my spine.

All I wanted to do was get the hell out of there as fast as humanly possible, but I couldn't move and I couldn't look away.

I just stared at him for what couldn't have been more than 3, maybe four seconds at the most. But it felt like forever.

And then I turned around and left.

But the look on that man's face will probably haunt me until the day I die.

I will never forget it.

...ever.

That's the answer to your question right there.

As we get older, we begin to realize, at long last, that there are no longer enough f**ks left in the world for us to give. We're going to buy the movies that we want to see and we are going to do the things that we enjoy, regardless of what some younger person in the store thinks about it.

I'm only 44, and you cannot even begin to imagine the immensity of the f**k that I do not give.

I used to feel self-conscious about liking effeminate 1980s synth-pop bands, horror movies, old black-and-white movies, and such. I used to feel self-conscious about not liking alcoholic beverages, televised sporting events, reality television shows, crowded events on New Year's Eve, and such.
So, I'll stay home on New Year's Eve, listen to some old Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode songs, watch Kiss Me Deadly and New Year's Evil, and then laugh the whole time, because I'm living the dream.

If somebody tells me that he or she thinks it's weird that I spent $60 on an out-of-print Criterion Blu-ray of Pierrot Le Fou or that I spent $40 on a limited edition German Blu-ray of Tourist Trap, then I just stop what I'm doing and write that down in my notebook of things that I do not give a f**k about.

Let that elderly man have a blast watching Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom if he wishes to do so. He's probably decided that he's going to do whatever he wants to do with his somewhat limited time on Earth, so more power to him.

As my own father told me a few days ago, "After you turn 70 years old, be sure that you always eat your dessert first, just in case."

Just enjoy the movies that you want to enjoy, let others enjoy the movies that they want to enjoy, and remember...

Maybe Salo is his one f'd movie he likes and you caught him buying it. We all have one. I'm in my early 30's I remember watching Doom Generation with a friend once he was like dude why do you own this?!

Was leaning more towards the extended version, but after reading through some of the threads, I still can't tell if that one's worth it or not (did I read this right that all the added scenes are upscaled?). I have the 2006 DVD, so I might just keep hanging on to it.

My current copy of the theatrical cut is the French Blu-Ray, which came out some years before the US version did. I liked the transfer a lot, I remember being impressed by its sharpness. Might have off colors though, never really gave it much thought. I might wanna switch to US version if it's the best transfer.

Honestly, I agree with him. Salo is shocking and perverse, yes, but it's also a pretty eloquent piece of work with strong fascist allegories.

It almost made my desert island list. Just behind Antichrist, but both were right on the edge.

Awesome line. Mind if I adapt this for a possible piece of fiction sometime? I can easily see a gruff police chief or wizened military commander saying this.

It seems like everywhere I go there is inherent judgment surrounding the types of movies, music and games I indulge in. I see it in friends, family, strangers. I used to follow certain assumptions: cartoons were for kids, gory movies are bad, etc. After a while, I somehow learned to let go of those preconceived notions and enjoy most movies for what they are (especially animation--it's amazing how much Disney films hold up even when you're an adult).

I might not ever shake the notion that I'll be judged as a perv or psycho for liking movies like Salo or Tokyo Gore Police or Street Trash or all the Troma movies and whatnot. With the exception of my parents (because I don't want mom's lecture and penetrating stare), I don't really care what people think. If anything, I'll embrace my extremities in tastes--it's one of the reasons why I'm Al the Strange.
