1. Paris, Texas
2. Mulholland Dr.
3. Eraserhead
4. Nashville
5. Wild Strawberries
6. Persona
7. Badlands
8. Paths of Glory
9. Night of the Hunter
10. The Seventh Seal

Feel like I needed all three of those Bergman films and I absolutely have to take the two Lynch films in the collection as a Lynch freak.

It's a masterpiece. I like those other films (particularly Gone In 60 Seconds) but Two-Lane is a whole different animal. Imagine if Bresson made a "car" film or a road movie. For me it's one of the best 25 films of the 70s. If you like Warren Oates, it is among his top three or four performances.

Nah, not really. Two-lane blacktop is about as quiet as as a desert road here in New Mexico. It reminds me of some of Jean-Pierre Melville's later movies (Le Cercle Rouge, for instance), with quiet men going about their business, just doing what needs to be done and no need to get all emotional and talky and stuff. It's really good (and yes, Warren Oates delivers an amazing performance), but it's most definitely not an action movie.

I could quite literally have just have Repo Man on my desert island. I never tire of that film.

Would Purple Rain make for a good Criterion release?

Yeah, I blind-bought Two Lane Blacktop, also expecting something along the lines of Vanishing Point. It was anything but. Not much action, slow pace. Wouldn't say it's a bad movie, but it didn't really connect with me on the initial viewing.

You know, I think Prince made a big enough splash in modern pop culture to justify it. They released the Beastie Boys Anthology, The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter, Bob Dylan, and This Is Spinal Tap at one point, so why not a Prince movie?

If they do, I could see them adding some nice juicy supplements, like a whole concert or music video collection or something.

Something I've heard for a while, and it pops up again every now and then, is that Carrie (1976) is coming from Criterion. How much truth is there to that?

And furthermore, I can see purple raindrops in next year's Criterion New Years newsletter! That would be an easy giveaway. I said it here first!

I think so. I bought the existing Blu-ray of Purple Rain last year, when I was going through a big rediscovery of Prince's 1980s catalogue, which served as a big part of the soundtrack of my youth in the early part of that decade.

For more detail, here is my review of that Blu-ray in the dedicated thread.

I'm gutted by the news today. I saw Prince in concert back in 1997, and it was a show for the ages. Two friends of mine attended the Prince show here in Atlanta last week that turned out to be his final performance.

Wow that sucks that your two friends down in Atlanta witnessed his final ever concert. I mean, that's also amazing but also very depressing... I mean, NOBODY expected him to pass at such a young age. MJ was 50 though, so sometimes these music superstars go at a younger age. I never listened to Prince growing up, but now I'm going to check out his entire discography right after I'm done getting through my Toto discography I've been listening to lately (yeah, I know, finally getting around to hearing Toto, don't laugh!).

Thanks for writing that great review though, Owl.

My Desert Island Criterion would be just one:

Babette's Feast

Because it's a desert island....

After eating coconuts and fish and fish and coconuts every meal every day of the week I want something that will inspire me in my growing insanity to believe I am actually feasting on French food. And trapped on a Dessert Island.

It's probably Mondo Trasho, but it would be even better if we could have Pink Flamingos! (Even if that happens, I won't be able to get it due to it being currently banned in Australia!)

Very clever!

I actually thought of including that film in my desert island list, however, I'd prob. go insane having to be reminded of such delicious food that I'll never ever obtain being on a desert island without animals and vineyards.

But if I had to include 10 films to take to a "Dessert Island" (not owned by the Hershey's Chocolate company), well, hell yeah, Babette's Feast will be the first on my list.

AND ummmm, no, Sweet Movie, will not be included on that list either. Nor Salo.

Two Lane Blacktop is in my top ten of all time, let alone Criterion. I can see how some people may not like it though. And as great as Oates is, the trio of Taylor, Wilson and Bird have some unimpressive moments.

As CPinheiro said, it's got a heavy existential element

Pink Flamingos was a Criterion Laserdisc so maybe it's flying back to the nest. His other early films would make a perfect Eclipse set.

Does every store website have to implement some kind of system where it prohibits certain titles to be shipped to certain countries? seems a bit extreme.
