I like a little wear in my collection (althoiugh I prefer to be the one who caused it). I might have to do the same when I actually get to watching it.

LOL!! Well, the corners are creased to begin with, so it's not like i created any noticeable lines, wear, or damage. I hope you know what i mean. By corners i mean the ones that run vertically the length of the slipcover. My case looks mint. It is a little tricky getting the case back into the slipcover however, but you just have to take your time and be gentle, while pinching the top right corner(the side opposite the binding) so it slides back in.

Yep, I did practically the same thing to slide it back in. I start with the Spine side, then make sure the open end is clamped shut tight enough to fit, but not tight enough to break the plastic.

You know, I just realised how sad this topic is that we are discussing. It's terrible that a discussion on over-tight packaging has gone on for DAYS!

Been lurking on these forums for while, but having finally got my Region A Blu-Ray player and a few Criterion disks I thought I would register

Just got The Seventh Seal BR in the post, opened up the parcel and to my shock the cover looked like a photocopy This was bought from a reputable source (playusa - good supplier for us UK guys) so I thought surely this cant be a pirate version!

Its not, everything else is fine but the cover looks shocking. Its printed on glossy paper and that but it literally looks like someone took the real cover insert and did a horrible job of photocopying it! Cant even see the Criterion 'C' or film release/criterion collection banner that goes accross rear, spine and front. The detailed info on the back is barely visable. Its a dark cover but not this dark!

Got in touch with playusa and asked for a new cover, but I just know they are going to make me go through the whole process of sending it back, then waiting for them to receive and then issue a replacement. I know from viewing this thread a few of you have had problems with the Marienbad slipcase (a disk which I have ordered too), do you think Jon Mulvaney at Criterion may sort me a replacement? Or have I no chance of getting one being based in the UK?

I would contact Criterion first...... chances are they will simply send you a new cover and won't have you send anything back..... I'm not sure about Play USA's customer service.... but Criterion is top-notch.

I got a damaged cover in a DVD a few years ago and "Jon" sent me a replacement no Ireland, no problem.
By reading recent posts here they seem to have the same excellent customer service so it's definitely worth mailing them.

Agreed. I was missing a booklet on one title (about a year ago). I mailed them and received it only a short while after that, and I live in the Netherlands. So it shouldn't be a problem.

I got the first "Marienbad" cover also and found that if you turn the booklet around with the staples end close to the disc it is much easier to slide back into the sleeve.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Have sent him an email so just waiting for a response.

Hopefully its a positive update

Has anyone ordered For All Mankind? I have been wanting to check this out for a long time and was just about to order the original Criterion release when the company announced they were going to start release BR disks. For All Mankind was one of the titles they said would be released, but its still been a long wait I cant wait, just got to decide where to order from at the best price and who will deliver quickest.

I pre-ordered For All Mankind when it was $19.99 from Amazon.....

Amazon usually has the best price, but Direct from Criterion is the fastest way to get it (but I can wait a few days for $5 off each title )

Thank you so much fdm! Is there anything relatively disturbing in it that you would recommend not watching in front of the wife?

He's clear he wanted to present all the moon missions as one mission with many takes. But, to me it's another example of the dramatic license he took with the movie Apollo 13, which to uber-geeks like me was an endless series of jarring disconnects.

I think Hank's From Earth to the Moon remains the best thing done about the US manned space program. I sure would love to see a series with the same care applied to the Russian space program. That is something we know almost nothing about. And it is a story that is long overdue to be told.

Even if it was a failure, wouldn't you love to see an HD recreation of an N-1 launch?

Gary

P.S. In August, Man on the Moon with Walter Cronkite comes out.
+1. I would love to see something like that! How fascinating would that be?

I politely disagree. You have to get back to what is the writer/director's intent. There are several major series or movies out there, each with their own angle.

PBS had To the Moon. Discovery had When We Left Earth. HBO/Hanks had From Earth to the Moon. Each covers the space program, but chooses what material to include and what to leave out. For instance, Earth to the Moon contains detailed material on astronaut wives, the press corps, etc. that the others omit.

Then there are the films, In the Shadow of the Moon and The Wonder of It All. I believe the first uses the missions as its framework and the later focuses more on the experiences of the individual.

This brings us to For All Mankind, and for this film, I need to preface my comment that as a child of the 1960s, the moon landing program was always "just yesterday" in my thoughts. Then, I saw For All Mankind, last year with the otherworldly soundtrack by Brian Eno. It captures the feel of the era, but suddenly, it is no longer just yesterday, but a time that is slowly backing away, like zooming back with the camera of the mind.

If your argument about For All Mankind truly is about structure and coverage, I have to point out that even When We Left Earth mixes shots from different missions and From Earth to Moon can also be cursory. For true, correct, and in-depth coverage, see the DVDs at Spacecraft Films, which offers multi-disc sets each for Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo, as well as multi-disc sets for each mission.

Very well said. Chilling, but very true (about the times of the past)!

Well, it's kinda graphic, I suppose. Hard to describe without spoiling it. Let's say there's some blood involved. If she's squeamish... (mine's become more and more so over the years).

It's fairly short, so you can watch it first to see what you think. There's a Japanese and an English version on the DVD.

Thanks fdm! I just picked it up actually for $19.99 but I had credit so I got it for only $5. I will watch it tomorrow night.

On to blu-ray, I just got my copy of Marienbad in the mail today. I'm surprised they went back to the books and cardboard cases. My copy of Seventh Seal was in a clear plastic so now it sticks out like a soar thumb from the rest. Does ya'lls copy of 7th Seal have a slip cover?
