Bringing Up Baby most likely needs much more work done to it than Ice Pirates. Therefore, releasing the latter is quicker and easier while they work on other, older titles.

I'm fixing the entire Blu-ray database and focusing specifically on Criterion right now. I'm removing "The Criterion Collection" from all of the titles because it's redundant. I'm also editing the OP of this thread and sorting everything by release date and mentioning how many releases of a given month have been reviewed.

I like the 'Che' images I have currently uploaded, but the dimensions are weird and not fitting neatly with the other artwork.

Why don't you own this set ? or do you not have a scanner? theres some decent phone apps that can 'scan' using camera which works well!

Looking nice and tidy though!

OK, not entirely Criterion-related, but sort of since they came out with -- and I bought and gobbled up -- the Whit Stillman Trilogy.

The entire crew of Last Days of Disco (which I think is simply brilliant) is back together, with Stillman writing and directing as is his wont and Kate Beckinsale and Chloë Sevigny all re-teaming for a Jane Austen adaptation!

Here's a short interview with the three of them, along with a review over at THR: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/rev...-review-858759 and here's the trailer: http://www.imdb.com/rg/VIDEO_PLAY/LI...b/vi309769497/

Wow, Beckinsale looks to be firing on all cylinders in the trailer. I may have to actually -- gasp! -- venture out to the theater for this one!

This will be a strange question: Does anyone know if Criterion typically re-encodes their reissues? I've noticed that they've begun to release the BBS box set films as standalones and was curious if they may have new encodes.

I don't think so. The only time I know that there have been 2 Criterion blu-ray releases of the same film with differences in terms of the on disc content is Playtime.

You're right about Playtime. That reissue used a fresher master with superior detail. What I'm curious about is if, for example, the reissues of Easy Rider and Five Easy Pieces are indentical encodes to those included in the BBS box set. If Criterion ironed out some of the
[Show spoiler]compression issues
they may be worth a double dip.

Just started my Criterion Hulu marathon before they are gone with two movies today:

The Threepenny Opera: This was particularly great, feels like a very similar world to Fritz Lang's M, quite pessimistic in it's social message and with songs, sounds like a strange combination but I thought it works quite well, also I am pretty sure I have heard several of the songs in modern interpretations, but they are a bit hard to identify, I guess the play in which this is based must be pretty famous, but I have never heard of it before.

Pepe le Moko: I didn't enjoy this as much but it becomes quite good in the second half, specially towards the end it has some great scenes, Jean Gabin is great, I don't know why I recognize that actor so much, the only other film I have seen with him is Grand Illusion.

Guess the only problem is I will be adding tons of titles to my upgrade wish list, which may take a while to be released

They should've done it a long time ago, but better late than never I guess. Just too bad that so many great films that they released in the past are stuck in compression limbo.

Today is Satyajit Ray's 95th Birthday... One of the rare directors who wrote screenplays for his movies, composed scores for most of his movies, a decent sketch artiste and one of the most popular author in his state/country.

He hammed it up a bit too much for my tastes. His smiling face on the poster of one of his
films that is being released on blu makes me think of Benny Hill.

Watched Phoenix last night and it was one of the more enjoyable, shorter films (only 98 mins) I have seen in a while. Very Hitchcockian in the plot, yet subtly addressing the destruction on multiple levels of the Holocaust.

This is a foreign film I will likely recommend to family members who refuse to watch movies with subtitles.

Written by German playwright Bertolt Brecht, it is indeed a famous play (itself based on an older play, Beggar's Banquet). The song "Mack the Knife" ("Mackie Messer" in German) is a classic, covered by dozen, if not hundreds, of artists over the years, including Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Nick Cave, Sting and of course, most famously by Dee Snider (of Twisted Sister fame).

Man, all of us Bobby Darin fans must be getting REAL old if Dee Snider's cover of Mack the Knife is the most famous version .
