It's awesome that Criterion is now selling posters, but am I the only one who thinks those look hideous?

The poster artwork is going to be the Blu-ray and DVD artwork.

Also, I don't particularly mind them. Then again, I haven't seen the movies so I'm not sure if they appropriately match the tone.

I want a poster of this cover!

That actually does come with a poster, but it's not of the cover.

So, after much prevarication on my behalf, and periodic haranguing from our very own Ray J, I finally watched Peter Weir's Picnic at Hanging Rock tonight. I was aware of the basic premise of the film, which appealed. And I've enjoyed every other Weir film I've seen. But man, I had no idea how terrific it is.

What I really like is that the disappearance of the four women serves only as the backdrop to the longing and emptiness in the lives of those involved.
[Show spoiler]The fact that the central mystery is never explained or resolved
only heightened my enjoyment. Right from the opening credits the film is unsettling, with the fantastic cinematography and soundtrack both adding to the sense of foreboding as the narrative unfolds. I'd seen the adjectives ethereal, haunting, and dreamlike used to describe this film, and now I understand why. A truly great piece of cinema that adheres to the old adage that it's about the journey not the destination.

There was one thing I didn't care for:
[Show spoiler] The short narrated denouement that described Mrs. Appleyard's fate. I really wanted the film to end with her sitting shell-shocked, dressed in black as if in mourning.
But that is a minor quibble. The Criterion BD looks incredible, and comes with the novel on which the film is based. I look forward to reading that, and to repeat viewings.

Here are some Criterion covers that I would certainly buy if made into quality posters...

First on the list and, in my opinion, the greatest Criterion cover out there at the moment...

And some others that are beautiful just upon first glance...

What do all these covers reveal about my taste? I don't know exactly but I suppose I tend to find sensual or "feminine" covers very attractive. Especially when they transmit a visual image of what the film is about stylistically.

bwdowiak, you've really got a treat in store if you've never seen any of the Lewton films. His productions were low-budgeted, but he had a superb sense of cinematic style. Lewton's lack of money fueled his creativity, and so rather than show you a monster, he would merely suggest one with a slight movement in the shadows and an eerie noise. The result was usually electrifying. We usually speak of directors as being auteurs, but Lewton is a prime example of the producer serving as the unifying, guiding, and overriding creative force behind a body of work.

As I mentioned earlier, my favorite of Lewton's films is I Walked With a Zombie. You'd probably never guess it from the title, but it's actually a handsomely mounted, stylishly photographed, uncredited take on Jane Eyre, set in the West Indies. It's one of those rare films that I've seen over 30 or 40 times over the years, and will never tire of; you really owe it to yourself to see it at least once.
I Walked With a Zombie is also my favorite. The Cane field sequence really did a number on me when I was a kid and it still gives me chicken skin seeing it.
For a bit of fun read the disclaimer in the opening credits.

There's also a tribute, of sort, to Lewton in The Bad and the Beautiful where Kirk Douglas' character is given his first assignment to produce/direct and he draws a cheap Cat Men film-complete with ill-fitting, moth-eaten costumes so he creates the formula that jm describes above.

I have this framed poster of Harakiri in my bedroom.

...better than the Criterion cover imo.

And I have this framed poster for Red Beard.

Again...better than the Criterion cover imo.

Yeah, some Criterion covers can be hit or miss for me - some gorgeous, others kinda drab (though the treatment of the films may be great).

The upcoming Dr. Strangelove is a reverse of that scenario though. That is, I like the look of the posted Criterion cover better than the digibook I got, yet I'm a bigger fan of the digibook in general (the color book and aesthetic style of a hard cover) than the Criterion digipacks.

Still, if the new Criterion offers a fair amount of new or intriguing extras or something, I may just buy it again. I have no shame...

It really does feel like a dream. Especially the scenes where the girls are at Hanging Rock. Laying around the rocks, reading, eating cake. It all seems like it's out of a dream, especially with that gorgeous sunlight everywhere.

I know there is nothing official, but making my wishlist for the next B&N july sale, I noticed based on last year, the more tentative dates could be July 4 - July 25 just missing the release date of The New World

Doesn't Barnes & Noble extend the sale for a few extra days when there's a mishap with the stores, or was that someone else? I think I remember seeing a post a year or so ago saying the sale was extended due to a problem with the website.
Also, depending if I can, I would like to get The New World during the sale, as I haven't seen any Terrence Malick films before. If I can't, then oh well. Might get that in November then.

I like the cover for In A Lonely Place, but it strikes me as an odd choice of font for a film about a writer, especially one from the golden age of the typewriter.

I wouldn't make The New World your first Malick film. My personal favorite is Days of Heaven and I think that represents him at the top of his game.

I know some people love TNW, but I'd bet that many of them would even agree that its in the bottom half of his filmography.
