Not quite - extant HD masters of the three are already available on Criterion's Hulu page.

Not by a long shot.

Henry V: released 1999 06 22 (#41)
Hamlet: released 2000 09 19 (#82)
Richard III: released 2004 02 24 (#213)
Olivier's Shakespeare boxed set: released 2006 08 01

I just watched it for the first time and really struggled through it. The pacing was mega slow (and I usually have a stomach for slow films) and I couldn't find any compelling tug in the narrative. It picked up a little more in the latter half of the film once school starts, but was still tedious. Maybe I'm just over films about boys coming of age with a catholic guilt complex.

It sort of reminded me of Beasts of the Southern Wild or Pan's Labyrinth, in the way that magical realism provides an escape or means of growth except that here the boy's life isint that awful, and his imagined sequences are quite joyless.
I'm not a great fan of it either. I feel like I'm committing treason here but I really don't rate Terrence Davies.

If ever there were a release with which to release the original source novel. I've always wanted to read McCabe, the Edmund Naughton book upon which the film is based, but it's long OOP and prohibitively expensive.

Really excited about McCabe and Mrs Miller, been near the top of my most wanted list for a while now.

The Orson Welles additions may be purchased as well.

This is funny because they interviewed him for the upcoming blu-ray.

CS: No B.S., one of the most transcendent filmgoing experiences I’ve ever had was seeing the original, uncut “The New World” at an early press screening. Now that Criterion is coming out with their edition of it, does it feel as if it’s finally being properly recognized?

Farrell: Oh wow, that’s great. It’s nice. I haven’t been waiting around for this recognition or anything, but when I heard that Criterion was doing it I was like, “Oh, that’s cool,” because I have Criterion films. I know that they have really interesting cinematic tastes, of course, and it’s kind of somewhat a classy affair. So I was really happy when I heard that Criterion were doing it.

isn't he from Sheffield? I think he might actually be from Liverpool and I may have read that in an article about the Liverpool football tragedy that happened in Sheffield.

Ok, so what does that leave unannounced for the year?

Blood Simple (confirmed)
The Story Of The Last Chrysanthemums (confirmed)
Dragon Inn (confirmed)
Black Girl, perhaps?
The Squid and the Whale (if that was indeed a clue)
Lone Wolf and Cub set (if that was indeed a clue)

Still four months left in the year. Wonder what other surprises there are?

I'm pretty sure Black Girl is definitely coming this year.

I'd say that we're looking at Blu-ray releases of Cat People and Heart of a Dog, as well as another film by Chaplin, Lloyd, and Wenders. Perhaps we'll also be seeing Kurosawa's Dreams this year, too.

EDIT: There's also a new restoration out of Jeanne Dielman so I wouldn't be surprised if we see an upgrade.

For future reference, Jayembee, where do you get the release dates for Criterion's different releases? I don't see them anywhere on their site. Thanks!

I meant to write Cat People and I forgot as I was typing.

Black Girl is doing a run near my house starting tomorrow. May go check it out.

Def. hopeful for more Chaplin, Lloyd, and Wenders. Perhaps The Circus, Girl Shy, and Until the End of the World?

I edited my original post to mention that there's a new restoration of Jeanne Dielman so that may be a likely contender for an upgrade.

I personally think the next Chaplin will be a talkie, so A King in New York. I'd say the Lloyd would be The Sins of Harold Diddlebock (Criterion has the rights to both the silents and talkies yet they have not released any talkies yet). Lastly, I think the Wenders film would be something "less" popular, so I would say The State of Things.

Do we have any more information on a possible Blu-ray release of The Tale of Hoffman?

The following Wenders films will be released eventually.

Quote:
Buena Vista Social Club
The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick
Notebooks on Cities and Clothes
The State of Things
Until the End of the World
Oh, and I forgot to mention earlier that we'll more than likely see Blu-ray releases of Linklater's Before Trilogy and Boyhood.

Well, I've been keeping tabs of the street dates all along. In the LD and early DVD days, I was using a monthly booklet put out by Image Entertainment (acting as distributor as well as label) and the monthly order catalog from the late, lamented Boston-area LD/DVD dealer Sight & Sound.

But also, CriterionForum's DVD/BD listings also include release dates. I've never managed to find the time to check their dates against the ones I have to see if they are in synch, though.

Janus Films website only shows "Jeanne Dielman ..." available in DCP, 35 mm. and DVD formats. Others mention Blu-ray and DVD. The website also shows "Beauty and the Beast," which looks like an upgrade in both formats. They may also come up with upgrades for "8 1/2" (I hope) and "The Leopard."

It's been confirmed by Thelma Schoonmaker. Only a matter of time.

Also, Nanook of the North will get a blu-ray (Confirmed by Mulvaney).

Huh. I was just looking through my want list for July, and in looking over Cul-de-sac, I discovered that Françoise Dorléac was Catherine Deneuve's older sister. It's a shame she died so young.
