I would love this to be a double clue that includes The Naked Prey.

But knowing Criterion's penchant for releasing movies already available on Blu-ray elsewhere, it could mean they want to take a "crack" at another release of the Island of Dr. Moon-reau.

[Show spoiler]Thank you. You're a lovely audience. I'll be here all night.

With the sales tax I have to pay, a B & N 50% off Criterions sale means nothing unless I can buy 2 or more.
Come July, I guess I'll get 3 Women, and The Player. Sale will be over by the time McCabe gets released.

Three days later he called and said I should be at the 10pm Tuesday screening of Waterworld at the local movie theater and someone would meet me there with more information.

So I plan on watching The Killing of a Chinese Bookie this weekend and in searching for which version I found a couple replies from 1.5 years ago. I haven't decided which one yet, but I'm leaning towards the longer version. Any other opinions on which might be best viewed first?

I actually greatly prefer the longer version. This was Cassavetes' original vision as released in 1976, but was pulled from limited release after only a week. Cassavetes decided to re-edit and release the shorter version two years later.

"Jesus, the days that we have seen!"

I just got home from a screening of Welles's 'Chimes at Midnight'. I had been waiting for some time to see the character that Welles opined was "Shakespeare's greatest creation" in what he deemed his "greatest film", but never wanted to watch some cheap bootleg copy.

I was finally rewarded for my patience this evening with the gorgeous Janus Films 4k restoration. This release is going to be the definitive master for years to come. No signs of DNR, a healthy grain pattern, and most of the source damage has been removed. There's one or two missing frames, but they're so infrequent that they don't deter you from enjoying the film. It's another solid restoration from Janus.

As for the film itself, it is easily the most accessible of his Shakespeare trilogy, and for me, the most enjoyable. Sure, there were some budgetary constraints (e.g. during the battle scene, you can kind of tell Welles was stretched rather thin on extras, and the dubbing throughout the film isn't the greatest), but it is an all-around very good film with great performances. I now see why Welles considers Falstaff one of Shakespeare's greatest characters. He is also one of the characters Welles embodied the most. If it's showing near you, I highly recommend it.

I'm out of "Thanks" but thanks. I wish I could have seen a screening of it, to be honest. I saw it many years ago, without the requisite understanding of Shakespeare or of life itself to totally appreciate it. I remember being amazed at the filmmaking itself. But I'm looking forward to seeing it now, with some added understanding.

For me the big thing with Amazon Prime is speed and reliability. If I place an order on Monday then I know I'll receive delivery on Wednesday. Sometimes the turn around time is 1 day.

With most other sites it's usually 5-7 days and the packing is poorly done.

You do realise that from a restoration you see in a screening to a Bluray transfer which involves encoding (which sometimes may be incompetent) a lot of things can change, don't you?

Agreed. My big gripe is with companies that use so-called "last mile" delivery services. This includes Amazon. I've had packages shipped to me this way that have sat at the local USPS distribution center for a week before USPS finished the delivery process. I love "free" shipping, but you get what you pay for and companies that offer free shipping are looking to cut costs any way they can.

I place enough orders with Amazon that if I were to pay extra for expedited shipping with every order, I would spend much more that the current cost of Prime. It also helps that I enjoy their included, albeit limited, video and music streaming offerings.

That makes sense. Different people have different priorities. For me speed is pretty low on the list since I'd be unlikely to watch whatever i ordered within 5-7 days anyways. Then i can take the $100 i would have spent on prime and turn it into 7 Criterions at the B&N sale

BN.com 20% off one item: BNFLOWER15 (Expires 5/23)

In-store: http://instore.thread.co/retailmenot...1573dc67bc0db4

The online code is not a bad deal if you're a member and have free shipping. I may use the in-store coupon if I can get 20% off $27.99. I don't recall if BN's blu-rays are $39.99 outside of sales?

In store I believe they are $39.99 (unless on sale for another reason).

I was in a store on Tuesday and they said they cannot honor the on-line prices. The salesman said sometimes they offer in-store deals not available on-line and vice versa.

Under my breath I said, "Ok...good luck moving these $39.99 movies between now and July."

Yeah, BN will absolutely not honor their own online prices, which is one of the many reasons why they're going to eventually go out of business - and deservedly so. For all the shit Amazon takes, and understandably at times, BN has such backward and self-destructive business practices that I refuse to feel sorry for them being overtaken by Bezos and his "evil empire."

Written on the Wind comparison between Criterion DVD and French BLuray.

Looking forward to the Criterion one.
Should the BLuray be cropped like that?

I think their philosophy is that people who want the lowest prices will shop online anyway, and people who just want it now will pay retail. They could be right, I don't know. I only shop there two times a year. 😄

I work at B&N and that's what I tell customers when they get so surprised at the lower online prices: the store is there for immediacy. Most people don't need books, like they do food and shelter. Most people are absolutely fine with ordering online and waiting a bit to get their books; other people claim that "My son needs this book right now for school!" (which, fun story, the area schools don't ever tell us this information and we only find out that info when the students show up at the store, so we're not entirely to blame for being out of school reads) or "I need a gift for my niece's birthday tonight!" The store is basically there for dedicated shoppers and people who have forgotten that they need something. No, it doesn't make sense that we don't price match our website (once upon a time, we could honor online prices for ship-to-home orders in store, but that changed more than a year ago), but nine times out of ten people are fine with ordering online. As far as I know, my store is doing fine; plus, with coupons and member cards, we've gathered dedicated shoppers who sometime show up daily.

unrelated, Shell, but I'm curious...

did you move all of those titles already because I'd maybe take the 2 Fuller titles off your hands and perhaps get you a bit more cash than you can make through some other outlet
