Yes, it's a digital mock-up, just like the ones on Hulu.

Ah Cannes is so exciting! Some good wins so far!

Just find some of the reviews hilarious as they have been pretty bad for some films, yet those film with the bad reviews are the ones getting all the awards lol!

Seems some reviewers just give bad reviews for attention?

Malle's Black Moon intrigues me personally. It's so mysterious and hard to decipher, which lends its "re-watchability factor" for me. It's futuristic in a pastoral sort of way. I mean, some of these Lewis Carroll inspired scenes are a bit wacky and preposterous, but its surrealist cinema after all! If one likes the films of Guy Maddin, then one might like this film in particular.

I'd love if David Lynch could make a remake of Black Moon with a more substantial story (ha, j/k) though. I always wondered what this would look like. It'd be interesting to expound on the gender war depicted in the film too. The animal-human telepathy I find intriguing as well.

It's around $35 on Amazon, that'd be quite the blind buy when you're on a budget! Absolutely day-one purchase for me though. Excited to see the other two cuts as well as the new supplemental features.

I think New World is my favorite Mallick, too, tho a lot of people just hate it. I simply can't understand that. Just the single shot of
[Show spoiler]Pocahontas in the formal garden
at the end of the film tells you most of what you need to know about Mallick. I think it's just a magnificent film.

OK.....Tree of Life is also a great film. But I see it as a gloss on his whole output, something like the Mallick Rosetta Stone, so I don't really count it among his narrative films. It's like a commentary or an essay.

Always good to find to someone who likes New World as much as I do. I've seen it a dozen times, so I hope it's as good for you the second time as the first. I think it was actually better for me the second time. And I'm waiting for July to watch it again.

It seems every year someone fires a few shots, too:

Sounds like they should have a duel.

"Shall we say pistols at noon?"

I only had time to squeeze in a couple of Criterions this weekend...

Autumn Sonata - Wow...extremely accessible Bergman with emotionally intense performances by Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullman. Persona still tops my Bergman list and Wild Strawberries is #2, but IMO this moves ahead of Seventh Seal. Now that I'm seeing how my wife and 13 year old daughter interact it hit home with me (not that their relationship is this fractured). Such a wonderful film. 9/10

Pina - I was looking for something I could watch in the background and popped this in. I know absolutely nothing about modern dance and this only held my interest for the first 20 minutes or so. I loved the way Wenders set up the shots especially those off stage, but this just isn't really my thing. Not sure I would consider this a true documentary on Pina. More like a tribute concert. 7/10

The non-Criterion that took up most of my Sunday was finally seeing The Hateful Eight. Just enough of a twist that it didn't feel like I was watching Reservoir Dogs again, but it did feel like more Tarantino déjà vu. 8/10

Default Thoughts on the Winners at Cannes

I am looking forward to seeing a view of the Cannes Festival's winning movies. These are the ones that intrigue me most:

Ma Rosa
The Salesman
American Honey
I, Daniel Blake

Since I only watch trailers after I have watched the movie, I base my interest on the written reviews. Sometimes I only read half a sentence, because I don't want any of the rest of the experience spoiled for me. From the minuscule amount that I have read, these four interest me the most.

Since there is an election year upon us, does anyone think we could see an upgrade of something politically minded such as Tanner '88 or Secret Honor?

Those are two I would love to add to my BD collection...

Fair enough, but there's plenty more election season yet to come for considering similarly themed films. No? An election season is hardly defined as March and April (a.k.a. primaries), but point taken.

When you see people posting on Facebook how they are so excited about the new Beauty and the Beast because the original is their favourite film.

Then you say, Oh you loved the Jean Cocteau version too!?

Then they say... no Disney.

FUUUUUUUUUUUU

No disrespect to those films, neither of which I've seen, but I'd prefer to steer clear of anything that would remind me of the political shenanigans we're stuck with having to endure right now.

Alexander Payne's Election is really darn funny, though. Thatd be cool.

Tanner '88 was shot on standard def video, so it's a highly unlikely candidate for a BD upgrade. Not impossible, but unlikely.

Not to imply anything by the subject matter and today's candidates, but I did get a little excited when I thought the Criterion hint was for JFK. Love that movie.

I'm not aware of too many quality US election/candidate/primary movies that are Criterion-worthy, but I would gladly take any political themed films. I still need to finish all of the Costa-Gavras titles in the collection. Missing might be my favorite first time watch of 2016.
