Of films not yet on blu-ray Wag the Dog may fit the bill. Criterion loves David Mamet.

A couple weeks ago I found Our Nixon on Mubi - very well done but it doesn't strike me as a prestige title for Criterion. Would make a great Eclipse Series entry, though.

And finish those Costa-Gavras films! They're all great, even the non-Criterions (someone please release Le couperet).

Two that would be great (but unlikely):

The Best Man (Franklin Schaffner; United Artists; 1964), starring Henry Fonda and Cliff Robertson, with a screenplay by Gore Vidal (based on his play).

The Candidate (Michael Ritchie; Warner Bros.; 1972), starring Robert Redford, Melvyn Douglas, and Peter Boyle.

Alexander Payne's Election is really darn funny, though. Thatd be cool.
Let's do Johnnie To's Election instead!

About to order a couple movies from criterion.
Anyone have thoughts on the new JFK movies (is it entertaining? or just interesting?) or A Brighter Summer Day?
Thanks!

While they probably have no idea that the Cocteau version exists, they aren't entirely wrong as this is a live-action film based on Disney's (original) animated film. They do obviously need to see Cocteau's film, though, which is equally magical.

I would love for Criterion to release Preminger's adaptation of Allen Drury's best-selling novel, Advise & Consent, which details the political shenanigans surrounding the nomination of a controversial candidate for the position of Secretary of State. Adapted by Drury and Wendell Mayes, it boasts taut direction by Preminger, excellent cinematography by Sam Leavitt, a wonderful score by Jerry Fielding, and an incredible cast, including Henry Fonda, Charles Laughton (in his final film appearance), Don Murray, Walter Pidgeon, Peter Lawford, Gene Tierney, Franchot Tone, Lew Ayres, Burgess Meredith (Best Supporting Actor from the National Board of Review), George Grizzard, Inga Swenson, Betty White, Will Geer, and others. The film was released theatrically by Columbia, and on Region 1 DVD by Warner.

IMO A Brighter Summer Day is a masterpiece. Slow building and gorgeous camerawork.

The JFK movies were interesting and I'm glad they're in the collection. If you're into politics or a occasional JFK conspiracy nut like myself, then you'll enjoy them. But they are more of a collection of supplemental documentaries rather than a real centerpiece in film.

I've somehow not seen it yet, despite having read a fair amount about the McCarthy hearings, but I've always been intrigued by Emile de Antonio's Point of Order. Seems like that one might be right up Criterion's alley.

It's funny, but I'd been thinking the exact same thing when reading reviews of the current Disney live-action/CGI version of The Jungle Book, where the reviewers say something like "It does justice to the original" and I know that they're referring to the 1967 Disney animated version rather than the 1942 Zoltan Korda version (which is in the Sabu Eclipse collection).

Well, I suppose I should be glad that by "the original" they aren't referring to the 1990s Disney version with Jason Scott Lee.

Default Barnes and Noble's 40% off blu-ray sale begins June 14th.

Sorry if this has already been posted, but in case it hasn't, I just found out from a Barnes and Noble employee that the annual 40% off blu-ray sale will begin June 14th. This employee actually showed me the advertisement, one he had just received this week-end, which he had tucked away behind the counter. I might be wrong, but I believe that that sale lasts three weeks and always precedes the annual 50% off Criterion sale, making that sale's start date July 5th.

And the hard-copy coupons that were mailed out last week expire on the 19th, which means there will be six days where the coupons (20% off one item) will supplement the sale prices.

That's a great call. It's a fantastic film, a perfect fit and one that's not likely to get much attention from anybody else.

I was actually disappointed by ABSD's camerawork. I feel like it's nowhere near as refined as The Terrorizers or Yi Yi.

It would be a perfect fit for Warner Archives which has been on quite a roll as of late.

I just saw distributed by Columbia and it didn't register that Warner might have (does have?) the rights.

I would have no problem with a WAC release. They've been on a huge tear this year. Their transfers have always been good to excellent and they're even starting to port more supplements from previous releases.

In fact, WAC is why I didn't bring up Seven Days in May. I don't know just how widely Warner is opening their library to Criterion but if even something like Seven Days in May might be on the table I would just as happy (well, almost as happy, I guess) with a WAC release.

I see Fail-Safe is a Sony DVD. Does that mean it would probably end up with TT if it gets upgraded? It's another of my Cold War themed favorites.

When our mail carrier came to the door, and handed me a package from the UK, well, there was no use explaining why I began dancing like a little kid on Christmas morning.

It's not every day that one receives a Kurosawa masterpiece in the mail.
