True fact: Back in the 1980s, many of the rental VHS tapes for this movie were screwed up during the Phoebe Cates pool scene, because so many of the people who rented the tapes would pause the film during that scene or watch that scene in slow motion.

It's scenes like that why a-b and zoom features were put on DVD players.

I'm not quite sure what the ownership trail is, but Advise & Consent was made by Preminger's own production company (as were many of his later films) and released theatrically by Columbia. But Warner did indeed have at least the video rights in the early 00s. They released it on DVD in both the Henry Fonda Signature Collection and the first Controversial Classics collection. Warner also released on DVD Preminger's next film, The Cardinal, which had also been theatrically released by Columbia.

I would assume that Warner still owns the video rights to both of these films.

I would have no problem with a WAC release. They've been on a huge tear this year. Their transfers have always been good to excellent and they're even starting to port more supplements from previous releases.

It's mind-boggling that Fail-Safe isn't out on BD yet, but then, there are a lot of films in the same situation. I suspect that the reason Twilight Time hasn't nabbed it yet is because either Sony wants to keep it for itself, or they haven't gotten around to doing a remaster/restore for it.

The remake was pretty decent, too. It was a live broadcast on CBS back in 2000. Directed by Stephen Frears, written by Walter Bernstein (who wrote the 1964 film as well). Had a great cast, too: Richard Dreyfuss, George Clooney, Don Cheadle, Harvey Keitel, Sam Elliott, et alia.

I remember seeing that - not long after I moved to these shores. If I recall, it was the first live television play for decades.

The original is truly terrifying. A great film, but not an easy watch.

Given the high level plot description, why cast an all-star line up of actors and actresses? How do you get your audience to invest in "intersecting lives" in the Austin music scene when it will take some all-time great acting for it to be anything more than celebrity spotting?

I'm reminded of the countless celebs who were photographed at Radiohead concerts when they were at the height of their popularity.

He did the same for The Thin Red Line and that turned out OK.

Well, Malick, as I'm sure you know, doesn't even really start making the film until he gets into the editing room. Actor after actor have told of how when they film for one of his movies, they find out if they're actually IN the movie at the same time the audience does: opening night.

I mean, yeah, Bale filmed some scenes. Did he make the final cut? Is he in it for like 90 seconds? Who knows? Not Bale. Not us.

I still haven't given up hope of a Criterion release. Obviously TT has significantly cut into the Sony/Columbia pie but it's not like Criterion has been frozen out.

And it's such a perfect fit.

And I agree that the most likely reason it's not out is just that it hasn't come to the top of the restore pile yet. Which is fine.

It's not like I don't have anything else to watch in the meantime.

You've missed my point. Do you think a celebrity line up is good for THIS film? Especially, with what Aaron just confirmed in the post above, he isn't exactly an actor's director.

Well, we have no real idea how this film will turn out. There's simply no way to tell until you see it, to be honest.

Actors go into these films with no real clue what character they've playing, what their role will be, if they'll even be in the movie! There's not even a screenplay. So, if the men and women acting it out on the set don't know what's eventually going to happen, it's crazy for us to theorize.

How would we know until we see film? It's Malick, I highly doubt anyone who is into his work will be caring about whether that's Ryan Gosling, instead of someone we never heard of. Plus, anyone not familiar with Malick will be drawn to a movie they might otherwise pass on, thus introducing themselves to his world. Win / Win

I didn't realize all the roles that had been cut in his films until I read this article...
