As for Stillman, I saw Last Days of Disco some years ago and absolutely loathed it.
If you don't like Stillman, Rohmer may not be your thing then. Both of them are sympathetic to young people who talk a lot.

As for Stillman, I originally thought I would hate Last Days of Disco when I first saw it--who can actually stand a bunch of pretentious yuppies just out of college?--but I then realized that despite how self centered the characters were, they were at least upfront about what they wanted, and completely committed to everything they said; there's nothing any character says in that movie that's in any way snarky or contrary to what they believed. Their insecurity was basically manifested in their delivery of their intentions--using big pretentious words and such. But nothing they say is actually really untruthful. So when you peeled away all the puffed up dialogue, there were very human desires and insecurities driving them.

I bought a copy of Red Desert on eBay for $8.99. It was sold as very good, but other than the case showing a little bit of shelf wear, it could probably pass for like new.

I've been interested in this film for some time now, but was a little worried that my sentiment towards the film would end up being closer to the way I feel about L'eclisse. I put it on late a few nights ago and really was enjoying the vibe. Got sleepy so I will have to give it another start some time (soon,) but I found it engaging.

Linklater is a huge Rohmer fan as well. His films, especially the Before trilogy, are pretty much just his versions of Rohmer films, even down to the outdoor foreign settings.

You've got it the wrong way round - Rohmer's favourite aspect ratio was 4:3, he actually disliked 1.66:1.

After just seeing one, this is actually the director I tended to find the most comparable at least in style, specially the Before Trilogy, so it makes sense him being a huge film fan:

The kind of films that are almost pure conversations but if you are in the right mood you can find immensely satisfying.

Only weirdos name their kids or pets after filmmakers.

Yes. Sometimes not 'getting' a director has more to do with not being used to the way they film (i.e the rhythm of the shots and edits) than not 'getting' an intellectual point that is being made.

It tells you everything you need to know about directors like him. In my case it's just another reason to add to the pile for why I don't care for his work.

Yes. But regarding Pauline at the Beach, I recall there was some debate over what was the original AR. Rohmer has made few comments about it other than remarking that he once saw Pauline on TV at 1.66:1 and he thought it looked "nice".

I once cat-sat a cat named Groucho (who ironically was a female) for a few weeks, and my girlfriend once named a houseplant Akira, but it died because she has a black thumb. That's about as weird as I've got.

Back in 2014, having read much about Rohmer's films, I took the plunge and invested in the Coffret 22 Movie set. It took about two months to work through all 22 movies. It was a very rich journey observing his vision. It is a shame there is no such compilation exists in the US for such an important filmmaker. I strongly encourage any serious fan of French cinema to invest in this magnificent collection.
