I have not seen Slapstick of Another Kind* but Breakfast of Champions was a mess. I loved the book but I felt that the movie missed the humor in the book and that too much focus was put on the Bruce Willis character. Also, I think just about every role was miscast, that the roles were cast based on marquee value rather than dramatic suitability. For instance, I love Albert Finney, but I always imagined Kilgore Trout looking more like Harry Dean Stanton. I always wonder what it might have been like with a different cast and Terry Gilliam directing it.

* I wasn't even aware that Slapstick of Another Kind existed until very recently. The descriptions I've read make it sound Olympian in its awfulness. Apparently, Jerry Lewis and Madeleine Kahn play dual roles as both a wealthy couple and their intellectually disabled children. Of course, I didn't care much for the book and I'm not sure that I even finished it.

Slapstick is a favorite Vonnegut for me, but that movie sounds pretty bad. I did like Mother Night a lot. Still have the dvd, which I would imagine is long out of print?

I don't think they specified this year. They are working on it though. I imagine they'll be screening it at art houses, and maybe even film festivals before it's released on BD. I hope so at least, as I'd love an opportunity to see it in theaters.

A theater run? Oh wow, I had no idea. I saw it 3x in the theater back when it released.

That would be well worth seeing in a theatre even if it wasn't showing locally.

For October, they already have Cat People likely lined up for then.

Yes, it was July. In fact, it was scheduled for release on 7/30 (2013), and Criterion let B&N have it a week early so it could be part of their July sale.

Hopefully Criterion's just now Facebook post of Sharon Tate means The Fearless Vampire Killers is coming. Unless they plan on a double feature of the original Valley of the Dolls to go along with Beyond.

Just found myself humming He Needs Me and had a melancholy reminder of how desperate I am for Criterion to release Punch-Drunk Love. Wasn't this first mentioned years ago? Probably looking at 2017 now

I couldn't believe it either! That was Del Toro's most highly rated film on Rotten Tomatoes too. I feel this will be an October release since its horror-related.

By the way, I love your new avatar! Are you going to attend the Penguins Stanley Cup celebration parade tomorrow too?

I watched "Slapstick" 3-4 years ago on Youtube. It's probably one of the worst films of all-time quite honestly. It's almost incomprehensibly bad. "Slapstick" is definitely a lower-tier Vonnegut novel. The Vonnegut novel I always thought would be easiest to adapt to screen is "Jailbird". Fantastic book. "Breakfast of Champions" is awful. I enjoy a lot of Alan Rudolph films, but, as you said, the casting was way off. Gilliam definitely would have been a nice choice to adapt "Breakfast of Champions".

My wish list contains titles that seem pretty unlikely and it hasn't really changed. I haven't posted these in a while, so...

Chabrol's Le Boucher
Talk to Her (Almodovar)
The Return (the Russian film from Leviathan director)
A Koreeda like After Life or Maborosi
And for something more popular, Dog Day Afternoon and The Conversation are about as good as it gets from the 70's
More Truffauf or Satyajit Ray always welcome, too

The Claude Chabrol films from the 60s & 70s are essential. I wonder why they have not been remastered in HD (or have they?). His outputs from the 50s & 80s are available in Blu-ray, but what makes him most essential are the outputs from the 60s & 70s, IMO. I'll buy them all if they are released.
