In fact, I believe that all of their films are billed as "a film by Joel and Ethan Coen".

With so many extra features on the "Valley of the Dolls" disc, I wonder why they didn't include Garland's costume tests and pre-recording? Would seem like essential extras for that film...

I have to agree with some of the others here. This has to be one of the, if not the best Criterion monthly line-up. I'm more excited about Dekalog than I was about The Apu Trilogy. And it's nice that they are including the two "Short Film About" versions.

I can live without the two Dolls, but the Reed, the Mizoguchi, the Tourneur, and the Coens...words fail.

The only disappointment (relative to my wishes, not expectations) is that Blood Simple is only the Director's Cut, and they aren't including the original Theatrical Cut.

It seems this is one issue that has happened before on some CC releases, and I would assume that is one drawback of working so closely with the directors of the films involved, or maybe they think increasing the manufacturing costs of adding an extra disc to be able to put the two cuts plus supplements might not be worth it for this release, they certainly go all out on some films like The New World so who knows.

This is the first thing I thought of when I saw the new cover art for 'Blood Simple.' Idk, maybe I'm nuts. Regardless, I get more of a 'Christine' vibe from that cover than I do of 'Blood Simple' so I think Criterion whiffed on the art.

They have a 40% off all blu-rays/DVDs sale going on right now, and if you use it with their 15% off email coupon, it's about the same price. I just picked up In a Lonely Place for $22.19 incl. tax today and had them order in a few Kino titles I've been meaning to grab. My expendable income over the next two months has already been spoken for lol.

I couldn't wait so I used a 20% mail-in coupon from Barnes & Noble during the 40% sale and purchased The Player earlier today. With tax included, it came out to around $18 and change. I'm looking forward to watching this great Altman film again (been at least 15 years since I'd seen it).

It may well be a case of the Coens wanting just the D.C. on it. There have been enough other instances of Criterion including an entire feature-length film (documentaries aside) as an extra, that I don't think it's that much of an issue.

Among their titles with a complete feature-length second film are:

The Lady Vanishes (Crook's Tour)
M (English-language version)
Brazil ("Love Conquers All" version)
Slacker (It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books)
The Killing (Killer's Kiss)
Godzilla (American release version)
King of the Hill (The Underneath)
Red River (pre-release version)
Scanners (Stereo)
My Darling Clementine (pre-release version)
The Brood (Crimes of the Future)
Carnival of Souls (includes both Theatrical and Director's Cuts)
A Taste of Honey (Momma Don't Allow)

It's just a shame we have to wait so long to get our hands on these releases.

Dammit. I have a few of those titles, and had no idea there was a second film included.

I really need to pay more attention to Criterion's included supplements.

I noticed there's a pretty big difference in the translation example shown. Not sure which ia closer.
Tony Rayns did the subs for the Eureka release.

Interesting. For those of us who haven't seen the film, are the two cuts significantly different?

The Director's Cut has more spit and polish. The Coens decided to trim the film by a few minutes to make it flow better. I think I heard that the trimmed scenes were scenes that didn't have too much of a impact on the story, but I haven't seen the film before, so someone else might have a detailed response on what was cut out.
