I'm kinda torn about whether I should import the Japanese Late Spring w the 4K remaster or if I should just pick up Criterion's release in a week or so.
I remember criterion blu does have some flaws (scratches & all) in terms of picture quality (it is not unwatchable) but it has the revered documentary 'Tokyo Ga'. I have not watched 4k remaster but it is said to be having better picture quality, how much?...I don't know...

What is more important to you?

Hey, everyone. Looking for some recommendations on blind buys for the upcoming B&N sale. Part of my current wishlist is listed below, and I'm looking for general consensus on which 2 of these you consider highly rewatchable must-haves that are still relatively accessible.

8 1/2
Persona
The Red Shoes
400 Blows
All That Jazz
Day For Night
Black Narcissus

As for my personal taste, I have no exposure in the way of international abstract cinema so I have no idea how I'll respond. I love psychological stuff, character studies and slow burns, and the struggling artist angles of some of those really interest me as well. Feel free to go off-book if there's something you think is in line with these but is missing from this list (and from my current collection).

is that documentary presented in some kind of restored fashion?

generally, I'd just go for the cleanest, newest transfer. not sure here, though, because I have a feeling that Criterion could re-release it. there is precedent with DVD releases. we haven't seen it yet with Blu-ray, but Late Spring was released more than 4 years ago already.

The Japanese one. Better transfer and it comes with a very beautiful booklet. Also, I remember the Tokyo-Ga documentary being nice, but it annoyed me that Wim Wenders paraphrases what the Chishu Ryu says instead of having subtitles.

Also there is a 4K remaster of Early Summer coming out in September from Shochiku in Japan!

Ok. Then my follow-up question. If I order from Japan, what other release is essential that I can order at the same time to take a bit of the sting out of the shipping fees. Isn't Yang's The Terrorizers available? Any other Koreeda? (I don't think so.)

Oh, and can I ask - is the booklet for Late Spring is in English and Japanese?

Not Criterion related much, but if you're a Peter Greenaway fan there is a Japanese BD (the only one so far):

81/2 (totally abstract with a really loose plot, but people think it's genius)
Red shoes
All that jazz
400 blows

The New World. That's one of my most loved films in my entire film library. Double dipping I will do for sure. And if I ever had to sell off 90% of my entire library, this is one of the films I'd keep for sure amongst the 10% I have left.

I find the new Japanese Late Spring release to be quite a bit better than the Criterion release in terms of picture quality. I'm usually not very picky about picture quality, but it felt like I was watching the film for the first time when I watched it on the Japanese release.

I also watch Tokyo-ga frequently, so both releases are a must for me.

Pleeeeeease say new transfer. I'd probably buy it for new features, but I've always been a bit dissatisfied with releases of this (had a DVD and 2 BDs)

I like The 400 Blows, as well, but I'm really burnt out on it.

I think I watched it five times within a few months and even wrote a paper about it when I was in college.

Based on your taste, I would highly recommend Persona and 400 Blows.
Your "struggling artist" comment also made me think of Chaplin's Limelight if you don't already own it.

I was blown away by this cover when I saw it at lunch today. Then, I saw someone comment how it looks like a female body part. I asked my wife what she thought it looked like and she said the exact same thing.

Now that's all I see when I look at the cover.

Based on your comments about highly rewatchable, relatively accessible, character studies, struggling artist, you should definitely get All That Jazz and Red Shoes.

Kinda off-topic, but since Terrence Malick is well represented by Criterion I think some of you might like this too:

Its finally coming!
