Insomnia would be my second choice. It's a brilliant neo-noir of the first order.
I was highly anticipating a great film when I watched The Wages of Fear a few years back. It is one of those films that wasn't bad but it did not grab me or have me on the edge of my seat for one second.

Of the original posts selections, I would go with Safety Last.

8 1/2
Persona
The Red Shoes
400 Blows
All That Jazz
Day For Night
Black Narcissus

As for my personal taste, I have no exposure in the way of international abstract cinema so I have no idea how I'll respond. I love psychological stuff, character studies and slow burns, and the struggling artist angles of some of those really interest me as well. Feel free to go off-book if there's something you think is in line with these but is missing from this list (and from my current collection).
Can't really go wrong with any of those. Those are some of my favorites. I think Persona especially would be in your wheelhouse.

You sure you have a pulse? I was like this for the entire last hour of the movie:

J/K man.

Anyways, as to the cover, yeah, and it is so obvious that it had to be intentional. But you see a lot of that in all kinds of art as I'm sure all of you know.

Today I watched In a Lonely Place and it was average. I was expecting more. The dialog was absolutely on point. Love the witty, sarcastic dialog. This was the second Humphrey Bogart film I have seen. The first was The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. His acting in that film was top notch. I felt like In a Lonely Place was too melodramatic. Some scenes were good and others were boring. I'll have to give it another watch later in the year.

It seems to be a common theme on posters for the film around the globe. Although it is a coming of age movie, I never picked up on the sexual awakening theme I've seen others mention today. Maybe I need to rewatch with that theme in mind.

I do see how this is a rebirth story and how that could relate to the cover.

Yeah, definitely intentional here, considering one of the main themes of the film is how the feminine can successfully defeat the masculine.

Oh, and can I ask - is the booklet for Late Spring is in English and Japanese?
The booklet is Japanese only, but it has a bunch of pictures and archival posters and then it has the script of the movie in Japanese (with pictures from the scenes).

It's hard to add other Japanese blus to the order because so many lack English subtitles (including the Terrorizers BD from Japan, but you can still get the English subtitled Taiwanese BD in some places). So I would just get more Ozu discs as they all look amazing and have English subtitles. There's a 4K Blu of Equinox Flower from Japan that looks phenomenal and the movie is beautiful!

I wish Criterion would get their hands on some Clair Denis titles. My DVDs aren't cutting it! The Intruder's PQ leaves much to be desired and Chocolat is one of those DVDs that annoyingly scan with top and bottom black bars (kinda like if you're watching it on a smaller display).

Watched The Kid last night and to say it looks fantastic would be an understatement....100/100 for PQ - flawless. Uncle Fester was brilliant as "The Kid".

Which UK release seems least likely to get upgraded next? I already have Good Morning.

I'm kinda torn about whether I should import the Japanese Late Spring w the 4K remaster or if I should just pick up Criterion's release in a week or so.
I own all of the Ozu UK Blu-ray releases. Floating Weeds from Eureka and the rest from BFI...all of those incredible films could use a Criterion upgrade. All of those tranfers come from old masters.

This reminds me of a story a friend told to me about when he was a substitute teacher for a public school health class, which on the day he was substituting, was one where students had to orally present their knowledge on human reproduction. The first name he called happened to be a twelve-year old student who had recently relocated from a Latin American country. Nervously, the boy got up from his desk and walked to the front of the class. He turned and looked at the class, paused, and said:

Dee mahn puts his pennis in dee woman's...waheenya.

It's important to buy every possible Ozu release, even if you end up with many copies of the same film

Every film you list is truly a classic!
You won't go wrong with any or all.

However, if I had to pick only two of your titles, one B&W and one color, I would choose:
Fellini's 8 1/2, the least of its attributes the superb b&w photography with the stunning finale!
Also The Archers' "The Red Shoes." Without a doubt one of the most glorious of all Technicolor films, and probably the finest motion picture on a performing art (ballet) in movie history.

But you can't go wrong with any of the others, especially The Archers' "Black Narcissus." It's another Technicolor feast with eye-popping production values. You'll never look at "nuns" in the same way again.

Enjoy whichever you choose. Your instincts for "classic film" on Criterion (and I'm sure elsewhere) are right on!

Oh- Your list doesn't include it but I purchased the Criterion "Black Stallion" release a few months back and can't stop watching sequences again and again. Once more, cinematography and directorial instinct make it a true classic for anyone old enough to watch and young enough to want to watch again and again
