I fully agree....just magical films. My favorite director after Kurosawa .

Well I just finished watching Revanche on Hulu.

Boy...that's a feel-good movie if I ever saw one.

If that isn't the feel-good movie of 2008, then I'd like to know what was.

I haven't felt this good since my dog died.

She was my best friend.

She had cancer and I had to take her to the Vet's office to get her euthanized.

I stared into her eyes as she breathed her last breath on this earth.

I can remember it like it was yesterday.

...it was a great feeling.

Revanche reminded me of that.

I'm grateful to Revanche for giving me this gift.

...the gift of feeling so good.

I'm afraid I won't be much help here. All I can say is that I don't think you're going to go wrong with any of these.

I loved 8 1/2, Persona and Black Narcissus (some of the most breathtaking cinematography I've ever seen in film. There is also this surprising, raw sexual tension just below the surface). I liked All That Jazz quite a lot, too, though it's been several years since I've seen it. Roy Scheider was magnificent. I really need to watch it again now that I own it. If you like any of Fosse's other work, I think it's a safe buy. And, from what I've read, you've picked two of Truffaut's most accessible films. Maybe pick one now, and get the other a little down the road.

Honestly, based on reputation alone, I would say all of them are must haves. That's the issue I have with my own want list. They're all pretty much no brainers. It's just a matter of which ones I have to have first. I wanted The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, The Red Shoes, and Black Narcissus all at once. But there were just too many films I wanted, and tough choices had to be made. Pick the ones that interest you the most. I don't think you'll feel let down by any of them.

Part of my current wishlist is listed below, and I'm looking for general consensus on which 2 of these you consider highly re-watchable must-haves that are still relatively accessible. Persona is simply brilliant. If you've ever seen and liked a Bergman film, you collection is really incomplete without it. Bergman and cinematographer Sven Nykvist create one of the most visually striking works I've ever seen (all of the films you've listed are really a treat for the eyes, especially anything by Powell and Pressburger). It's one of those films you're going to be thinking about for days after seeing it. And

8 1/2
Persona
The Red Shoes
400 Blows
All That Jazz
Day For Night
Black Narcissus

As for my personal taste, I have no exposure in the way of international abstract cinema so I have no idea how I'll respond. I love psychological stuff, character studies and slow burns, and the struggling artist angles of some of those really interest me as well. Feel free to go off-book if there's something you think is in line with these but is missing from this list (and from my current collection).

LOL, I should have know. I saw this on sale here a couple of nights ago, and almost did. But I hesitated. Now I know why. Of course, Criterion releases it, so I have to buy it.

I need to sell a lung, or something. Seriously, Criterion is going to be the end of me.

You mean this:

Is this confirmed?
I already own it on DVD, HD-DVD and I also own the Canadian Blu-ray steelbook, what can make this one worth a purchase for a guy like me?

Well, I'd go check it out since it's obviously such a feel good movie, but I need my NWR fix, so Only God Forgives it is.

Maybe tomorrow night.

There was one in the works, but I'm told that after the reading of the synopsis three execs pulled a Hudsucker Proxy
[Show spoiler]
and the project was archived.

I also wrote a paper on The 400 Blows in my senior french class. We had to watch four french films over the course of the semester and write a five page analysis in french on each. I had already seen so many french films it was a breeze and the most fun ever in that class. So Thank You Criterion for giving me all this french film knowledge. Most people picked current films my professor was impressed I knew the classics.

In case anyone is wondering my other three were Belle de Jour, Diabolique, Vivra sa Vie

OMG, that's gorgeous. Very similar to the Mignola art for Cronos and The Devil's Backbone. So excited for a fine Criterion edition.

There is one in the works. Zac Efron is starring and Demi Lovato's attempting to show her range as the hooker. Should be fun.
