I caved yesterday at B&N and picked up a couple of titles mistakenly marked 30% off rather than waiting until next month. With my member discount I couldn't resist to be sure I got a mint copy of Dr. Strangelove and Fantastic Planet.

Last night I watched Fantastic Planet and it was my first exposure to the film. Me, my 2 year old son, and my 5 year old daughter were mesmerized by the imagination of this world. My wife thought it was the dumbest thing she had ever seen.
I was so engrossed by the imagery that I need to rewatch soon to pick up more on comparisons to political ideologies. Very unique film and deserving in the collection. 8/10

Aha! That's what I thought haha, thank you. I have a coupon that expires the day before. D'oh! Haha. I guess I'll just have to use it on something else this weekend before the real sale starts.

I have Harakiri on my sale list as a blind buy. Looking at screen caps in the Beaver review, the CC release has stronger contrast but looks cropped against the MoC release. The MoC is very keenly priced at current exchange rates. Anyone have both presentations and can comment? Or any other views on this?

I would LOVE to see Criterion also release Midnight (1939), starring Don Ameche and Claudette Colbert with a screenplay by Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder. Would be especially neat since the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" in 2013 and IMO deserves to be on Blu-ray.
There are a lot of great 30s comedies that need some blu ray love. Among them, My Man Godfrey, The Awful Truth, and Bringing Up Baby stand out as classics of screwball comedy, but there are plenty of others. It's criminal that we don't have ANY of the great films from this period by Mae West, W.C. Fields or the Marx Brothers on blu ray. Duck Soup, please!

They surely didn't know what they were seeing, it's not like it's hardcore porn, I'm sure they weren't harmed!

A bit of trivia concerning today's date, both from 1916:

Today is the 100th birthday of the incredible Olivia de Havilland, still with us and God bless her. Happy Birthday and many more, in good health and cheer. I am not sure if she is in the Criterion Collection currently, but a handful of her films are available on Blu-ray.

On a grimmer note, today is also the 100th anniversary of one of the darkest days in the history of Great Britain. The opening day of the long, bloody 141 day struggle on the Western Front of WWI known as The Battle of the Somme. The offensive was designed to relieve the pressure on the French Army locked in a death struggle with imperial Germany at Verdun. I imagine today is a solemn day of remembrance in the UK.

July 1, 1916, saw the British suffer over 57,000 casualties, including 19,240 killed, in a single day. It was the single most terrible and bloody event in the entire history of the British Army and scarred the UK for decades afterward. More losses on that day than the British suffered in the Crimean War, the Boer War, and the Korean War combined. And there were to be 140 more days to come, though none remotely close to the horror of that first one. RIP to the memory of those who gave their all so long ago.

I posted on Facebook about Olivia de Havilland's birthday earlier today. Just incredible, both for her acting and for her successful fight against studio contracts.

The 1946 film noir, The Dark Mirror, is fantastic, because Olivia de Havilland plays identical twins.

Incidentally, today is also the 31st birthday of Léa Seydoux, who appears in the Criterion title, Blue is the Warmest Color, as well as in the latest Bond film, Spectre.

Finally, last but not least...

Today is also my 20-year anniversary of being a state government employee.

I love Bringing Up Baby even more than HGF. Absurdly, wickedly funny.

I don't know how they do it in Georgia but if you were in Illinois you would have almost put in a full year's worth of work by now.

I kid, I kid...

This is one that unfortunately didn't do it for me, and I usually love the Archer movies, I liked it but I guess I was expecting more, and maybe I need to give it another watch.

So I might regret this some day but since I have been selling stuff and I am going to ship stuff tomorrow if anyone wants it for $10 shipped to US let me know by PM it is in like new condition and region free.
