They look very similar in every regard other than brightness. It says the AE has better extras than the Criterion so if you care about those you should probably go for it, but based on PQ alone I sorta agree with the DVDBeaver commentary at the top about "the Criterion is quite probably more accurate (darker usually is)." Based on those caps alone it doesn't look like either transfer would impact your enjoyment vs the other. :P

It's a pure masterpiece. One of the best films in the Collection, IMO. And it is a major influence on the work of people like Aronofsky and NWR, as far as I'm concerned. It certainly played a major role as an influence on Black Swan for instance.

I haven't seen those films so I can't compare them. The aerial fighting leans more to plausible than fantasy. There's plenty of climbing trees and scaling roofs but there's no flying. Some of the action is done in silhouette and the fight in the bamboo forest is very cool.

It's one I've been debating for years but I'm worried I won't enjoy the subject matter. I may just take the chance in a few days.

Damn. I'm shaken. I love his body of work, no lie.

I'm happy he lived long enough to see Heaven's Gate get a much needed rediscovery and discussion and is now widely considered to be something of an essential American film and even masterpiece. There's something really satisfying in that redemption story.

I don't think that it's actually sharper but "looks" that way because of the increased brightness.

Still a chance it's not since he didn't actually remove the shrinkwrap... (but I wouldn't be surprised if you're right).

Well, seems cdnchris at criterionforum did remove the shrinkwrap, and yup it's still there.

No. I'm talking about the opening credits in the scene I posted. I can see why people don't like it, but I don't find it to be random or misplaced.

That little opening in the cover recalls the transition from various designs in the credits - at least, I thought it did.
