You should have been here in the 1970s. I was living in Kailua, Oahu at the time and firecrackers were legal and were about 50% louder than their modern day equivalent. Between 11:30am on New Years Eve and 1am on the day it was deafening white noise. I was in my single digits and it would make me shake while covering my ears.

Hi everyone, my first post and it's about firecrackers. I've been reading this thread for years and have been collecting Criterion titles since 1991. Oh those expensive laserdisc days! My first buy was the cav of 2001. I have 44 Criterion bds and over 100 of their dvd titles. I'm mostly an art film person and started buying Criterions for the Japanese movies.

Now I'll just sit back and enjoy reading again.

2016 continues to suck. Abbas Kiarostami dies from cancer.

RIP

Absolutely gutted. His Certified Copy is among the five best films of the century for me.

This one strikes me particularly hard. Kiarostami has shaped and formed my taste in both film. I'm grateful for each and every one of his works. His work is immortal and thus he is as well. Certified Copy is easily one of my favorite films of all time. Screw you 2016 and cancer.

Apart from all its signature Commedia all'italiana trappings, it tells a fascinating narrative of a Milanese car factory executive who visits his southern hometown of Catanao and unsuspectingly gets embroiled with the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, courtesy one “magnanimous” local Don Vincenzo.
Alberto Sordi is outstanding as Nino Badalamenti as he navigates his way through this seemingly endless nightmare while performing a domestic balancing act between his cosmopolitan northern-Italian wife and his orthodox, repressed Sicilian relatives.
Mafioso starts out as another harmless, observational south-Italian social satire but gradually transforms into an intensely dark and cynical crime fable with an enthralling, almost sweat-inducing climatic sequence.

It should be especially intrigue most of the Sopranos aficionados, as it gives a harrowing first-hand account of a reluctant “relative from the other side” dispatched from the old-country for a quick, covert American assignment.

Although a BD upgrade seems unlikely (since the dvd is OOP), Criterion deserves a big creamy cannoli for incorporating it into the collection and rescuing it from obscurity.

Great, great director whose ability to deconstruct post-war Italy was pretty much unmatched. I think that he was also a much better satirist than Elio Petri (whose unbridled political bias frequently pushed his films in overdrive mode).

I think that it is only a matter of time before at least a couple of his films enter the Criterion Collection. In the meantime, the ones that are on English-friendly DVDs are definitely worth seeking (and owning).

This is a problematic release, but the film is wonderful and I don't think anyone will be restoring it any time soon:

For whatever reason, this movie crossed my mind when thinking of what to watch on the 4th of July. It isn't on blu-ray yet, and may not ever be. It's just a personal favorite that has stuck with me since the first time I saw it. (The 4th of July connection starts at about the 1:00 mark. What's not to like? Not mentioned in this trailer is Sandra Bullock, who has a somewhat significant part in the movie, but wasn't a house-hold name at the time of filming).

EDIT: Oops, I take the part about Ms. Bullock back. She is listed in the credits at the tail end of the trailer.

I just finished watching my Criterion Blu-ray of Monte Hellman's The Shooting, and am now listening to the commentary track before I move on to Ride in the Whirlwind.

As I posted earlier, I'm using the month of July to catch up on the westerns that are in my still-unwatched stack. The days are longer right about now, and most westerns are good to watch this time of year, since the occasional daylight glare on my television screen does not interfere with my enjoyment of these films that generally take place mostly in brighter daylight. More importantly, these movies are long overdue for my viewing, and I'm finding belatedly that most of them are quite amazing.

The Shooting is notably less accessible than most of the other westerns that I've seen, although the story itself is deceptively simple. Atmosphere goes a long way, though, and I love the uncannily post-apocalyptic vibe of this one, although it is not a post-apocalyptic film. It's a sparsely populated film, that's for sure, and, as the booklet essay points out, it wouldn't be a stretch to believe that the main characters are the last people on Earth.

Jack Nicholson is featured in an early role in this film, and, even at this stage in his career, his ability to convey intensity through facial expressions is apparent. Warren Bates has the most screen time, and there's more to his presence than meets the eye. Millie Perkins is a beautiful, but odd and unpredictable, woman, and I'm reminded of her role in the impressive 1976 horror film, The Witch Who Came from the Sea.

The desert is its own character in The Shooting, and there's a real sense of danger here, meaning that this looks like a place where one could certainly die of thirst.

This is good stuff, and there's a distinct Cormac McCarthy-esque feel to it.

I had been following Kiarostami in the news of late. Last I read a few days ago he was going to Paris for medical reasons.

We've lost a great artist.

I suppose I'm the only person who doesn't care much for Certified Copy. Close-Up, on the other hand, is a masterpiece in my opinion.

I'm actually going to re-watch Like Someone in Love right now, as I've been meaning to for some time.

Damn. That's just terrible. Certified Copy is one of the movies I'm picking up with the B&N sale. I didn't know he was fighting cancer.

I expect there will be a tribute on the Criterion home page tomorrow. And, for Michael Cimino.

Certified Copy is one of those Criterion titles that has always intrigued me, but I have never tried to dive in. I'll have to give it a chance.

RIP Abbas Kiarostami.

This MTV piece on the 50 greatest Criterion releases had Close-Up as numero uno...calling it "the greatest film ever made."

While I cannot agree with that assessment, as I personally didn't think the film was that good...it does say something about Kiarostami’s importance as a filmmaker.

...rest in peace.

Default RIP Noel Neill

Noel Neill also passed this weekend at her home in Tucson. Loved seeing her in the Adventures of Superman when I was a child. She was 95, one of the original role models of a modern woman for children of the 50's. She appeared in close to 100 films.

Great to see you here! While I am not as quiet as you, I have also been here for years, and I usually do a lot more reading than talking. I stopped talking during a phase when it all got no d of childish. Say, on an unrelated note, where has Polaroid been of late?
