Be careful what you ask for less you find you're a character in a Ray Jackson script.

Polaroid - try to remember those people have huge amounts of built of passion, just like you. It sometimes boils over not so much b/c of you but b/c of their passion for film. You more than most can understand that passion. Try not to ruminate over it. Let the pain go and try to recognize their passion.

Don't stay away.

They screwed up the color timing on the disc, there's a blueish tint, and the Region B Arrow Blu-ray has fewer compression artifacts.

My B&N was emptied pretty quickly. Managed to pick up The Royal Tennenbaums and The Killers. Went to B&N website and ordered The In-Laws, The Spy Who Came In From the Cold, and Homicide. I'm done for a while.

How did you get $8 off a single title?

Your mileage may vary, but I found Ride in the Whirlwind to be a vastly superior film to The Shooting. Both movies hit the ground running, but I related more to the plight of the cowboys in Ride in the Whirlwind who must go on the run from a posse after they are falsely accused of being outlaws. This film recycles most of the cast of The Shooting to good results, even if Jack Nicholson and Millie Perkins do not get to show quite as much character range. I enjoyed seeing one of my all-time favorite actors, Harry Dean Stanton, as Blind Dick, one of the genuine outlaws.
Completely agree. I watched the set a couple of months ago. I viewed them in the same order as you. I really liked The Shooting, and could easily watch Warren Oates eat cereal on film for two hours (ok, on second thought that may be an exaggeration). All the characters are great in it and the story is well done.

But I thought Ride in the Whirlwind was fantastic and infinitely more relatable, moving, and tragic. The Harry Dean Stanton factor adds to its awesomeness, as does veteran character actor Cameron Mitchell paired with Jack Nicholson. Most of the critical reviews of the films that I have read rate them the opposite, with The Shooting being thought of as the better film. I did think it was edgier and more arty, feeling like a later 1960s movie similar to the style found in the BBS set and Hellman's later Two-Lane Blacktop, but I disagree with the critics on it being the better of the pair.

Not sure if you know this, but the middle-aged homesteader and father of Millie Perkins in Ride in the Whirlwind, who factors in to the latter half of the film, was played by an actor named George Mitchell. I thought he looked familiar and did an online search. He is the same actor who played the old crazy sterno-drinking wino in The Andromeda Strain who survives the initial outbreak of the disease along with the baby.

Yep, I didn't really get it on the first go-around. Liked it better the second time (still pretty wacky though).

Also, I can't seem to get enough of its soundtrack these days.

Well, you are Humphrey Bogart. You have more charm than a mere mortal man.

Polaroid, how can I live without your mutual Terrence Malick fandom!

Furthermore, you're like the only person here who puts all this effort and energy into making those awesome Criterion covers. You're also the best I've seen at making this artwork! We need your presence!

Don't let anyone discourage you. This is just a website. Think of all the people who are friendly with you (like me, or theater dreamer or Great Owl, etc.). Think of all the good things, not the bad things, that make movie discussion, collecting and viewing some of the best things in life.

Okay, DAY 1 at Barnes & Noble 50% Criterion sale ended with the purchase of 2 releases for me!

Fantastic Planet (blu)

and

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (blu)

$14 each!

I used a pair of 20% mail-in coupons, in addition to my 10% membership.

Don't worry kids, I'm not going to spend too much at this sale. Just a few new release titles here and there. Got about 5 more titles I want to purchase before the sale ends.

Good choices, good deals. I ordered those as well, along with The Manchurian Candidate, Ivan's Childhood, El Norte, Breaker Morant, Riot in Cell Block 11, and The Bridge. This might be my biggest Criterion order yet, but I still plan to place a few more for new releases, especially when certain coupons become active.

Can't wait to start another Criterion binge-watching session.

I was lurking on the Criterion web site and stumbled upon the following Phantom Pages – also added my hopes/guesses for possible spines in the future:

[Show spoiler]This is another batch of adding directors, just weeks after five (yet-unspined) phantom pages were added in June.

A couple observations:
[Show spoiler]
  • Both Howard Hughes (from last month’s phantom pages) and James Whale are associated with Hell’s Angels.
  • Jack Arnold (from last month), Tod Browning, and James Whale have all directed classic monster movies – possible box set? It'd be perfect for Halloween/October announcements...

I would say they are more likely to release
[Show spoiler]The Old Dark House from James Whale than the Frankensteins. Kino used to have it, no clue if they still do or not.
