Sort of, i have faith in this collection. But i only buy them when they are on sale and of course the plot has to be interesting.

True. It's hard to go wrong with their collection. Speaking of the Third Man, I'm actually annoyed that I missed getting it during the sale because I went to a different B&N. I just found 3 at another B&N close to me and I'm still debating whether I should get it even if it's probably regular price or hope that by the next sale, it's still gonna be there.

Let me get this straight...........
you all base films from what you read and how they are "ranked" on IMDB? So with that being said, The Shawshank Redemption should be the best movie ever made right? ![]() I'm not trying to judge you all and your tastes. Just trying to see why IMDB is reliable when every new summer blockbuster is always in the top 5. It's rankings are based off of hype and popularity. All but 2 of the top 15 are Hollywood films. HMMMMM, wonder why that is!?! And the other 2, just 2 of the most popular films ever (The Good The Bad & The Ugly, and Seven Samurai). Oh and for the ones who will prob say "CG, if they are not good movies, all those people wouldn't have ranked it that high". My response is "top lists of all time" is crap. The only way I would take a list at value is if the rankers have seen EVERY SINGLE FILM EVER MADE, so no popularity will play a role in the list. Also, how do you go about "ranking" films? How can you tell what is better between a gangster film and a war film for example? I could say lists is a starting point, but don't get caught up into the hype and popularity. ![]() Last edited by SpiderBaby; 08-19-2010 at 03:24 AM. |

I don't think very highly of IMBD reviews at all. People often vote to try to affect the score as a whole, so votes of 10 or 1 used far too often to take seriously. For instance more people think Godfather is a 1 than collectively think it is a 2,3,4,5, and 6. More people think it is a 1 than think it is a 7. Really?
Plus, if the critical thinking level of voters matches that of the posters on their message boards then I would run, run, run far away from their movie advice. As for Repulsion, I love it, as much as someone can love being genuinely unsettled for a couple hours. And for the record, Summer Hours was one of the best blind buys I ever made. |

I usually blind buy a lot of my movies as well, I do try and get a general idea of how people feel about a movie via IMDB, rotten tomatoes etc BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY I have a simple metric for myself, it goes "Do I really want to see this?" if the answer is yes then I buy it because spending $20 on a movie is in my opinion better than buying cigarettes, going clubbing etc We all have our hobbies (ours being movies) and we justify it any way we can.

If someone is going to subscribe to a list of great movies, I would put IMDB on the very bottom as far as an informational resource. That's just my opinion but it remains as valid as any. Still, if the IMDB is the only thing that gets you to watch Duck Soup, then I'll take it all back. |

Just to clear up a few things you have A. Critically Acclaimed Movies
and B. User rated, There isnt a site in the world that could compare to IMDB simply because of its popularity. Its the google for movies. So if a needed a reference to what i thought a regular viewer thinks of a movie then there's no site better than IMDB. |

one question arent all the big classic films, including Criterion films in the top 250???? I thought so, so whats the fuss. No one will sit there and agree that the Shawshank redemption is the best movie of all time. You guys are thinking way too hard. Shawshank is more widely loved thats why its so high, everyone cant get into evrey genre of movies. Shawshank attracted every audience.

Am I the only fan of Wikipedia?!
When Criterion releases a movie I haven't heard of before, I read about it on Wikipedia. Don't usually read the plot section, but I'll glimpse over and see what it is about, how it was received critically, who is in it, etc. |
