A couple observations:
[Show spoiler]
  • Both Howard Hughes (from last month’s phantom pages) and James Whale are associated with Hell’s Angels.
  • Jack Arnold (from last month), Tod Browning, and James Whale have all directed classic monster movies – possible box set? It'd be perfect for Halloween/October announcements...
I'd be very interested if Harmony Korine got the Criterion treatment. My guess would be for Gummo.

I believe before it was released it was edited to an R from an NC-17 cut. Plus, his piece "The Diary of Anne Frank II" consists of actors from this. It would be great if he gave the ok to release it, but it is projected using multiple screens so that could be tough. Or it could be an option of split screen style or viewing one at a time. Who knows though..well besides Criterion.

Do they add pages for screenwriters? If so it could be Kids, it's probably the most "important" film he's associated with.

That's a great film I don't care to see again. It would fit into the collection.

I thought of that too. In the past, they'll add the relevant players (director, screenwriter, cinematographer, actors & actresses) all together in a batch as a new spine gets added. Earlier in June, a batch of directors (John Hughes, Robert Zemeckis, among others) were added without an associated spine (...yet) and this new batch seems to be along the same lines.

But agreed, Kids is probably is most important / well-known film. (Haven't seen Kids yet, but I love Spring Breakers like nothing else! )

As I posted earlier, I'm using the month of July to catch up on the westerns that are in my still-unwatched stack. The days are longer right about now, and most westerns are good to watch this time of year, since the occasional daylight glare on my television screen does not interfere with my enjoyment of these films that generally take place mostly in brighter daylight. More importantly, these movies are long overdue for my viewing, and I'm finding belatedly that most of them are quite amazing.

The Shooting is notably less accessible than most of the other westerns that I've seen, although the story itself is deceptively simple. Atmosphere goes a long way, though, and I love the uncannily post-apocalyptic vibe of this one, although it is not a post-apocalyptic film. It's a sparsely populated film, that's for sure, and, as the booklet essay points out, it wouldn't be a stretch to believe that the main characters are the last people on Earth.

Jack Nicholson is featured in an early role in this film, and, even at this stage in his career, his ability to convey intensity through facial expressions is apparent. Warren Bates has the most screen time, and there's more to his presence than meets the eye. Millie Perkins is a beautiful, but odd and unpredictable, woman, and I'm reminded of her role in the impressive 1976 horror film, The Witch Who Came from the Sea.

The desert is its own character in The Shooting, and there's a real sense of danger here, meaning that this looks like a place where one could certainly die of thirst.

This is good stuff, and there's a distinct Cormac McCarthy-esque feel to it.
It's Warren Oates and not Warren Bates... Yeah, I hate to be that guy, but he was an awesome actor that sadly had only a short run as a headline actor.

The Shooting is an awesome though. Like you said, it does feel as if these people are the last people on earth.

Thief of Baghdad is already out by Cohen, unless you mean the Michael Powell one which already has a CC DVD edition.

I just don't see Criterion, or anybody else ever getting the rights to distribute Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, or Dracula. Universal would never give up rights to their classic horror films. Those three films, specifically, are as closely associated with Universal as any films in their catalog.

I'm a few days late here, but wanted to give a short eulogy for a director whose films have a special place in my collection and in my heart and this shout out is for Michael Cimino.

Heaven's Gate was THE film that opened up the floodgates for me and my love for this web site, this thread, and for the Criterion Collection. It is exactly the type of film I love to see get supported by Criterion - a redemption story for a wonderful director who, IMO, got the short end of the stick. It is a very special film - Ambitious (w/ a capital A,) and heartfelt. At times its flaws are glaring and at times it is pure movie magic. The attention to detail is unmatched by any other period drama I can recall - the cinematography, costumes, set design, and score are all perfection.

If you haven't seen Heaven's Gate, give it a try and remember that it is an art film that happened to have been made for a large studio.

Cimino is, to me, the Montgomery Clift of film directors - not quite as pretty, but with a career in film that seemed to end too abruptly and almost as tragically.

Thank you for The Deer Hunter and for Heaven's Gate. Rest in peace.

Absolutely agree. I also watched Velvet Goldmine just last week. I had a bit of a Todd Haynes marathon spurred by rewatching Carol.

The greatest thing about having a movie collection (... considering that you have power, a blu-ray player, a blu-ray disc and the time) ... is that you can watch any movie in your collection at any time you want to, no matter how many times you've seen it before. With that in mind, I'm about to watch A Hard Day's Night for the umpteenth time ... on the anniversary of when Paul and John first met (July 6th, 1957). Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!

I've been itching to rewatch it lately.

I guess tonight would be appropriate, as it had its theatrical premiere in the UK on this date.

How long does this sale last and are there any discount codes?

I got 10 items in my cart, but I'd prefer to buy half next week and the other half at the start of August.
