I'm interested in a couple of DVDs but can't bring myself to buy them because they are DVD not Blu-Ray...

The Adventures of Antoine Doinel. I'm a huge fan of the 400 Blows. Never seen any of the others in here and I don't believe any are on Blu-Ray (at least not in the U.S.). I do already have the blu-ray of 400 Blows. I don't want this on DVD, but I want it in general, so I may get it anyway. Hmm...

Then there's Berlin Alexanderplatz. Will this ever make it to Blu-Ray? I have never seen it, but I'm a big fan of Fassbinder.

Then there's the Ingmar Bergman trilogy with Through a Glass Darkly (1961), Winter Light (1962), and The Silence… (1963). I've never seen any of them, but I love Bergman, and none of these are on Blu in the states. I own all the Criterion Blu-Rays for Bergman. I also have Scenes From A Marriage DVD from Criterion, so I think these movies would be great to have, but again, I'm reluctant to buy DVD when Blu-Rays may come out someday!

And finally, Eric Rohmer's Six Moral Tales. I like these kinds of movies. Among my all-time favorites are the Before Sunrise / Sunset / Midnight trilogy, which I've often seen compared to these. I'm not personally familiar, though, never seen any of them! Again, the DVD thing is my main reason for hesitation.

What are the odds on each of these sets coming out on Blu-Ray?

I grapple with the Bergman trilogy dilemma constantly. I think those films were recently remastered but I don't know when exactly they're coming out or from which studio

There are several single item codes, the BNTropical is the current best. BNSPARKLER may go live in 31 hrs or so for a bigger order (25% off 100+ orders). B&N had been changing codes at the last minute to restrict Movies or change conditions so until it's functioning it should be considered a rumor.

Store coupons -- mostly 15% single item will be coming 7/14 for those that prefer in person choices.
That's what I screwed up, didn't realize that BNSPARKLER didn't start yet, and the other one that doesn't start til 7/25 BNJULY15 I believe.

Looks like BNTROPICAL runs thru the 14th and BNSPARKLER doesn't go live til the 12th, so if it doesn't work - will still have TROPICAL to fall back on.

The Adventures of Antoine Doinel has been available on Blu-ray in UK (Region B), so the HD masters are definitely available for these films. I wonder when Criterion will upgrade the box set, though.

For Berlin Alexanderplatz, I think Criterion is waiting for the 4K Restoration of it. I believe The Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation is in the process of doing the 4K Restoration of all his films, so it will most likely be restored in 4K one day. When Arrow released The Rainer Werner Fassbinder Collection box set, they said the 10 films included in the box were the only ones restored in 4K so far. Not sure what has been restored since, but I believe Criterion will release Berlin Alexanderplatz once the restoration is done.

Thanks for the tip! Someday I'm really going to have to pick up an all-region Blu-Ray player, because there are a LOT of movies I want that aren't available in the U.S. You definitely dissuaded me from buying either of those though, because I can either import Antoine, or wait for a U.S. release, and I will wait for a release on Berlin as well.

Any thoughts or info you might be able to provide on the Bergman Trilogy or the Eric Rohmer set for potential blu-ray availability?

Holy God. To quote Paris Hilton, "that's hot."

Or, referencing the early 80s cheese comedy "Brewster's Millions", that's a room, er, closet I could die in.

If only they'd actually managed to put them all in spine order. 523 is before 522.

Get one. I purchased the Francois Truffaut collection for just £19.74, that includes the cost of shipping to the US, even though Amazon had it listed as £19.99, I just tried it your order still totals £19.74 when you go to check out. Also if you really want a Rohmer box set this is the one to get, which is one more reason to invest in a region free player.

I had my eye on the Apu Trilogy the other day at B&N. I left without it, but they sound incredible. I'm probably going to be back next weekend and pick it up. Is this a must own set?

That closet looks incredible. I noticed they don't have "Chungking Express" in there, which would go between "Europa" and "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" on the back shelf. I'll bet you they have plenty of copies lying around the offices though haha.

I'd definitely pick it up. The first two films are fantastic, still need to get around to watching the third.

I'd say yes, not having seen the movies. This is based on reputation alone.

I will be picking it up before the end of the month if I can get a 20% coupon for one item in store.

Indeed. Mulvaney is selling them on the black market.

I don't know much about the other two, except that only one film from the Bergman trilogy was released on Blu-ray in Japan (Winter Light). Not sure why only one film has been released so far. Maybe this is only one out of three that has been restored (I don't have the Japanese Blu-ray, so don't know the quality). For Six Moral Tales, some films in the Potemkine Rohmer box set are in 1080i, including My Night at Maud's. I think this means that some work needs to be done before Criterion can release them.

Hope these sets will be released from Criterion someday, but they only release a few box sets per year, so it might take a while for them to release all of them even if the HD masters are readily available.

Rather than run the risk of seeing more films I want go out of stock before midnight tonight, or Barnes & Noble messing with the coupons further, I placed my big order using the 20% off $60 coupon. Overall, I'm still pretty happy.

My second order of the B&N sale:

3 Women
La Jetée/Sans Soleil
Day For Night
Wings of Desire
Summer With Monika
Only Angels Have Wings
Black Narcissus
The Red Shoes
Phoenix
Bicycle Thieves
The Bridge
Insomnia

Three of the films I'd planned on getting are out of stock: In The Mood For Love, Certified Copy, and Autumn Sonata. I figured that Certified Copy would be out of stock, with the recent passing of Abbas Kiarostami. But it's in stock at all the local stores, so I'll probably pick, and maybe a few others before the sale ends.
