I do. There is obviously a good enough (at the very least) HD master for the Altman, and not one for the Melville. You go with what you got.

Well, that's a matter of opinion. I think it's nice to have access to the majority of the body of work of a great filmmaker like Altman. Why wait years and years before putting it all out?

Plus, I don't think the variables in Criterion's decision-making are mutually exclusive like that. Perhaps they haven't released Le samourai yet for a number of reasons, like legal rights or proper source availability.
It is because they don't have a quality source for it. Word is they turned down the one from Pathe because the restoration was so poor.

Idk if it helps you, but I'm 30 and I think it's extremely overrated. First half is good, but it just gets cliche in the second half and loses any mystery the first half had.

That would depend on who and what you're talking about. Yeah, chances are an Altman film would sell better than a Melville film, but I'm reasonably certain that someone like Kurosawa or Bergman would sell better than Altman.

Pan's Labyrinth is the only one that jumps out at me right now, although The Executioner looks intriguing. All of the titles can wait until the November Barnes & Noble sale.

That's probably just as well, since my big priority in October is the Blu-ray release of the Miami Vice television series. (Yes, I'm dead serious.)

In related awesomeness, my Criterion Blu-ray of Carnival of Souls arrived in the mail today.

I like Altman quite a bit as well but Short Cuts was a real chore for me to get through.
Not crazy about the Player either but that one had enough funny bits in it to keep me going whereas this one felt long and exhausting.

Stoked to upgrade Boyhood and Pan's Labyrinth! I'd love it if they released The Before Trilogy and The Grand Budapest Hotel before year's end..

I really like it. Since I have the BDs of Cronos and The Devil's Backbone, I'd be tempted to get the BD of Pan's Labyrinth and the DVD edition of the set. But there's no point in that since the DVD edition doesn't have the hardcover book. Looks like I'm going to have to get the set on BD anyway.

I can't believe Boyhood is finally happening. My favorite film in a while.

I'll definitely be picking up Boyhood during the November criterion sale! I put off buying the regular release for a long time despite the fact the film was one of my favorites of that year. (I'm currently doing the same with Grand Budapest Hotel, which I liked even more that Boyhood)

I might have to splurge on the GDT set as well.

I didn't say that Melville sells better than Altman. If you reread your post, the reason you suggested as to why CC would release another Altman is presented as fact. That may not have been what you meant and you have now made that clear, so thats fine.

All I'm saying is that they are close to on par with each other, so theres no way that it is about moving units.

And of course, I know they have problems with the Le Samourai master, so thats why we don't get it versus any alternative release.

On the other hand, it doesn't have the book of Carver stories that was in the original Criterion DVD release (it was removed for a later DVD reissue).

Guess the posters on here were right in their prediction of a Del Toro boxset!

I haven't seen it yet. It looked like an interesting bit of filmmaking, but I just never managed to find the time.

Any Robert Altman news is great. Totally on board for Short Cuts.

I've never seen Pan's Lab but I've heard a lot of great stuff from people. Will probably pick up the Criterion edition because I know there were some DNR issues with the original.

Boyhood and Short Cuts will be definite buys.

Can't stand Pan's Labyrinth or Guillermo del Toro so it will never be a purchase of mine.

Good month overall!

Good lineup, weird that Criterion classified Pan's Labyrinth country as Spain, it was even nominated for foreign Language film for Mexico

Now I need to see if the book from the trilogy can make me change my mind about wanting to own the other 2 films since my love is mostly for Pan's Labyrinth only.

The Spanish and Italian films sound interesting, I am just sure I will not be getting Boyhood, but still hoping for the Before Trilogy next month

I'd like A Prairie Home Companion too. Could be good for some kind of Remembering Robert Altman doc too - I know Paul Thomas Anderson was heavily involved in the making of it and there was some behind the scenes stuff shot with those guys on set.
