Sounds great to me, I am intrigued, I like 3+ hour movies

Probably just Pan's Labyrinth for me. Though it's looking like my November haul is already filled with some of these recent announcements.

BOYHOOD only for me. Day one.

And yes, I was born in 1977, and consider it a personal favorite - one of the best film experiences of the past decade.

More Double Dipping!

I'm excited about Short Cuts though. The Executioner and Trees I haven't seen, but I'm intrigued.

They'll still do coupons, but the best ones will be restricted to members. Which, I'm fine with.

Pan's Labyrinth definitely intrigues me, and I'm glad I held out on buying it. Short Cuts, too. More Altman is always a good thing.

30% off for one item was standard for Black Friday, not sure if there was one better for members.

I think what anthonyls meant is that since they decided to shut all current online coupons for Criterions this time, there might be some change in future sales, although I still hold hopes at least for that 30% off on November which worked great for boxsets.

Just a theory I have.. no one needs to entertain my somewhat rhetorical question.
I liked it, but didn't 'love' it. The 3 hours moved fairly briskly for me, though, so that's a plus. As for it being 'great', well, that's for history to decide. As far as 'coming of age' films go, it acquits itself well, but the competition in this category is so stacked...I don't think it would rank top 5 all time in this genre, but it's a good film in a genre already filled with so many good films.

Doesn't stand up over time? The movie came out only about 2 years ago! Have standards already changed that quickly?

Seriously, though, I'd think it'd be the scenes with the evil stepfather which probably will come off worse on repeat viewings. While I certainly know the feeling of being a kid and tiptoeing around an angry adult, it does smack of Hollywood emotional manipulation in a film which tonally aspires more towards a sense of distance.

Although I’ve only seen Il Posto, I can totally see Olmi being a huge influence on Leigh. His deceptively simple yet nuanced dissection of the Italian middle-class, featuring a motley of quirky characters was reminiscent of some of Leigh’s contemporary works.
Colour me intrigued.

Talking of Mike Leigh, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if criterion boosted their Leigh catalogue in the not so distant future.

I had High Hopes yet Another Year has gone by, enough Criterion lets dispel with these Secrets & Lies.

Do you know if Criterion (or anyone) working on a restoration of their own?

I haven't heard anything sadly, but I feel it's bound to happen sooner or later.

I already own Cronos and The Devil's Backbone, but I really want the Trilogy set. I'm guessing it'll be a total redesign, though, and won't just be a packaging of those two and Pan's Labyrinth all in regular cases. If the Flash Sale is going to be around the time the box set is released, I may just have to get it. Hopefully we'll get more info on the set the closer we get to the release date to help me make up my mind.

I've never heard of The Executioner or The Tree of Wooden Clogs, but they sound interesting. Altman is iffy for me, so I'll probably pass on Short Cuts, and I found Boyhood rather boring, so that's a definite pass.

I would love to see a small collection of his earliest works for the BBC. A "Mike Leigh: Play for Today" Eclipse set, perhaps?

That's probably just as well, since my big priority in October is the Blu-ray release of the Miami Vice television series. (Yes, I'm dead serious.)

In related awesomeness, my Criterion Blu-ray of Carnival of Souls arrived in the mail today.
I agree. Kind of a disappointing month IMO.

Though for me it's hurt by the fact that I really didn't enjoy Boyhood, so I was never anticipating that one (I know others have been). Short Cuts is not really my cup of tea either.

Pan's Labyrynth? Already have the blu-ray. I enjoy that film enough. Not really enough to double dip, but as I've yet to see Cronos or Devil's Backbone I suppose releasing them as a 3-film set is as good an excuse as any to buy all 3. Good marketing.

The Executioner sounds intriguing. I'll probably be buying that one blindly unless someone recommends against it.

Welcome to the Criterion Collection thread.

There's currently a half-off sale going on at Barnes & Noble. Come on in, buy a few, and join the party pal. You can even find out about savings coupons in the B&N sale thread, to make your selections even thriftier.
