You know, I can't stand the French New Wave films that some people rave about. I watched them and I was bored to tears. And I've found that, just because it's a movie distributed by Criterion, that doesn't mean I'll like it. But I also don't understand why people get so excited about 95% of the movies they discuss in the "Normal" threads of this North America section. As I type this, "Kick Ass" is the top thread. Now, I wouldn't even consider renting a movie named "Kick Ass," but apparently some people like it. Which is my long-winded way of saying we all have different tastes, and we're probably not going to change much. But it's good to get out of your comfort zone and explore new things. I've discovered Pandora's Box, M, Steamboat Bill, and the White Hell of Pitz Palu by moving out of the mainstream. Will Kick Ass people ever do that?

But getting back to Joan... it might help if you say to yourself, "Dude, that's a real cadaver!"
Well probably 90% of movie watchers would probably watch Kick-Ass and Passion and prefer the former by a mile. That might be saying more about you than those who didn't like Passion. Heck, the Milla Jonovich Joan of Arc film was more entertaining than the one you mention.

There still sold as digipacks. I thought releases from now on were going to be standard clear cases, but that apparently isn't so.
Bottle Rocket is out in stores in a clear case. So, assumingly, they will all be available in the new packaging at some point.

For me The passion of Joan of Arc is so good because of all the small details, the different angles, the framing, the editing, the acting (Falconetti's eyes). All of these things amplify the emotion in the movie. People that don't necessarily pick up on details would probably get bored with the movie.

I found Joan of Arc to be emotionally draining, I can’t really explain it but it was one of my first Criterion films that I saw and my first silent film. Anyway I consider it to be one of the best films ever made and one of my favorites.

That's the problem...there are plenty of "older" films that are as good and in most cases superior to any modern films.

And as far as I'm concerned...any "good" film doesn't need to be heavily dependant on dialogue. Cinema is all about choice of camera shots, angles, framing, etc. and the really good silents (Chaplin, Keaton, Murnau, etc.) are choice examples that support this.

Except for those that are OOP...like The Man Who Fell To Earth. The Third Man was just a case of good timing (no pun intended ).

I like some silent and classic films. Sherlock Jr. and The General are brilliant, brilliant films imo. Although I will say it took me a while to really get into and appreciate some of the classics and silent films (The Third Man took multiple viewings for example).

I suppose I need to revisit Passion, I just currently think it's overrated.

Everyone. Check out this new movie I just heard about,

"Warner Bros Presents: A movie about a remake of a remake to the sequel of a remake. With Will Smith and Leonardo Dicaprio. It's going to have stuff blowing up, some background music to match the mood of that moment, some crying, and some plot explanations in the middle of the film to act like the audience is dumb. Don't forget a gimmick to keep people talking about it, like blue aliens or a little girl cussing and dressed as a superhero. Either Michael Bay, James Cameron, or the master himself Spielberg will direct. Or all 3. Does it matter anyways? We just want to see stuff blown up! Coming soon in 3D."

Wow. Awesome right? That shoud totally make some serious money!

I think I just actually gave studios an idea.

Not on this one...... Netflix has me watching films I otherwise would never see, and "Kick Ass" was one of them......

Norbit is a guilty pleasure at times......
I like "turn your brain off" Michael Bay stuff....... (some of it)
Iron Man is better than The Dark Knight by a mile......

But "Kick Ass" is painful to watch...... not one good actor, nor character I can make myself like........ it was a tough one.... I wanted it to get better, but it just kept getting worse.

EDIT:

Thought I streamed this.... but I actually got the disc in the mail on this one.

If Will Smith's kid isn't in it too.....then I doubt it'll beat out Titanic.

Throw him in there too. Have Justin Bieber as Leo's kid, and all 4 can blow stuff up together.

It appears the upcoming Criterion Collection release of "Modern Times" may be a cut version. You can read more about it here on Nitrateville.com (a forum where the hardcore silent film fans belong to).

Criterion Collection's response:

The Chaplin family stands behind Charlie Chaplin's decision to have the final verse removed, and this is indeed the version of the film we've licensed from them. We're sorry you'll be missing our edition of the film, as it promises to be a more well-rounded edition in terms of the supplements, plus an improved picture and sound, (and it's available blu-ray!). The final verse will be included as a supplement, as MK2 had presented it.

Well I always respect your opinion but in this case you went out of your way to attack IMDB and mainstream movie fans in general. I consider myself a fan of both mainstream movies and the more obscure films that you can find in the Criterion catalog. The whole topic started innocently enough with a basic discussion of movie reviews. IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes are merely a tool (one tool of many) for many people, myself included, in determining if a movie is worthwhile to watch. I also base my decisions on recommendations from other and even online discussion. Heck, many movies I've watched this year have been off of recommendations from people on this thread. Websites like IMDB aren't perfect. Many of their highest rated films like Inception and Saving Private Ryan I hated. But for the most part they are a nice tool to have. That's all I was trying to say. No need to crap on IMBD or other review websites just because you don't like all of their highly rated films.

P.S. You like Rob Zombie films?!?! Yuck!

LOL. That was actually really funny. But please don't send that plot overview to Spielberg, Bay or Cameron. They might actually begin work on the project.

Have you been to the forums of IMDB? The same people who rates movies there. I'm not hating on the site's movie info, because it is a tool for me as well. It's the "top 250" list and the people who think highly of it. People can bash me about me bashing lists, but those people are snobs in there own way thinking a movie is better than another one. Isn't that more of a snob than what I am doing? Just because those people don't know more obscure films doesn't get them off as being a snob. They coud be a snob thinking Inception is a "work of art" and Kick-ass sucks. That's a snob. But I can say both suck, and be called a snob?

Personally, I can see were CG and ChadFL are coming from. I communicate with film snobs daily and the truth is, there are many of them who think everything that has come out of Hollywood lately is crap. Granted, I like to remind those who only follow foreign films that all countries are guilty of producing crap, not just the US.

But it all goes deeper as there is a new generation of film fans who dislike the mentality of older film fans because they allow films such as "Citizen Kane" to be in the top of "greatest films of all time" polls.

But what it comes down to is everyone has a preference of what they enjoy and what are not into. I get into conversations with younger cinema fans who cannot fathom why people watch films created before the 1950's as they felt the films acting and structure were terrible. Like in this thread.

And again, to each their own. What's most important is what these films mean to you and if you are entertained. There are those who want something deeper and fulfilling, while there are those who don't mind catching mindless action or moronic comedy.

But just have fun enjoying and watching films.

Well I won't argue with you there. Zombie seems extremely intelligent when it comes to films. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to translate to good directing. The only film of his I found mildly entertaining was his first Halloween film. House of 1,000 Corpses was one of the few movies I nearly walked of the theatre on.

And about IMDB, I quit reading those forums ages ago. It's basically a forum without any real mods to police it so it's anythign goes. Then again my local newspaper's website is like that with the comments section yet I still trust the website for the most part. This website is only different because we have effective mods who have no problem nuking a thread that gets out of line. Which happens quite a bit thanks to people like you and me.
