Colour me intrigued.

Talking of Mike Leigh, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if criterion boosted their Leigh catalogue in the not so distant future.

I had High Hopes yet Another Year has gone by, enough Criterion lets dispel with these Secrets & Lies.
HHHHH....eyeCwhatyoudidthere... Remember the hilarious trailer for 'High Hopes' during my college years when we'd go to the cool cinema that showed great films. Discovered 'Babette's Feast' and thankful that I had a chance to see it. I remember reading the description and thinking I had no interest but by chance, a friend was in town and nothing else was playing during the time so we went to see it. It will always hold a special place in my memory.

I'm just talking out of my hat here, but I suspect it won't be a "limited edition" in the sense that there will only be a small number of copies to sell. Probably more like Disney's "vault" concept, where it's sold for a limited time and then retired.

It's just going to have a given print size like TT does, that's it.

The whole idea of Criterion limited editions makes me slightly nervous, to be honest. I wouldn't consider myself a completionist, but I'll come close to owning all of Criterion's blu-ray releases eventually (save for those that have since been re-released, like the StudioCanal 2015 release of The Third Man). Some of the films I have yet to buy, like Last Year at Marienbad, or The Man Who Fell to Earth, are going to cost me an arm and a leg. Imagine what the cost will be for those of us who, for one reason or another, fail to get one of the short prints. If we thought that OOP full runs were expensive on EBay, Christ, the people selling short runs might just ask us to cough up a lung.

What I'm hoping a "limited edition" means to Criterion is that it's a low print of unique packaging, where the regular packaging is a standard full run. Let the people who go nuts over that kind of stuff fight it out. As long as I can still get the film, I don't care if somebody has a fancier box than I do. The extras are always nice, absolutely. And I love the way the Criterions look, especially some of the DigiPacks. But ultimately, it's always the film that matters. If the Classic Hitchcock box set, for example, were a limited edition packing, I'd be fine with just buying the four films, individually.

I've got a question: With the talk of a Le Samourai possibly getting a blu-ray upgrade in the future, does anyone know the chance of Criterion sorting out their licensing issues with The Army of Shadows & Le Cercle Rouge?

I have no idea who owns the rights to each film and such, but it would amazing to have these films back in the collection, perhaps in a deluxe Melville boxset with Un Flic and upgrades for Le Doulos & Le Deuxieme Souffle?

I'm dreaming I know, but I remember back how Playtime was Out of Print for quite a while until Criterion brought it back in the Jacques Tati boxset. Hoping for something similar here!

My guess is that the "set" is basically a slipcover with three amarays inside, like Criterion's Hitchcock "set".

Pretty sure that's how it will be. I can't imagine Criterion discontinuing a title like Pan's Labyrinth. It's a sure money maker for Criterion. Just you won't be able to buy a box set of all three, but you can still get them individually.

Sorry but was Polaroid's remark supposed to be humorous? The Zatoichi movies were never sold separately.
And I doubt Criterion's going to sell a 100-page hardcover for 5$, even if they give you the option of buying it separately.

I'm being serious - outer case = $5 book = $5 inner sleeve = $5 etc

Well that's what they quoted me and I've bought replacements...

It's a square box though not a typical case sleeve

Just a theory I have.. no one needs to entertain my somewhat rhetorical question.
It was fun reading everyone's replies, pro or con. I think some of you who are on my side of the fence kinda know what I was getting at here.

Hope it holds up well on second viewing for those of you who like it.

Am I the only one who prefers the DVD art on the del Toro set more than the Blu-ray's?

Not at all, I like the color, patterns, and style of the DVD set the most.

The Blu-Ray set looks very monotone to me. I can see the gothic appeal in it, but I personally find it less attractive and distinctive.

If anything, it reminds me less of Del Toro and more about these rock/metal albums I have...
[Show spoiler]

Is the resemblance too uncanny, or is it just me?

The 100 pages book would make me say it won't be a set similar to the Stillman bundle but a real specific packaging, maybe a digipack with an outer case.
However, I dont think people should worry about not being able to get stuff over the long term. There is some exclusive material in the book but that's it. The 3 movies will be available separately, most likely for a long time.

It'll probably be like Arrow's packaging for the Price-Poe set, a hard outer case containing the armarays and hardbook (with less discs than that set). And yeah, while you may not separately snag the box/book, you will definitely not be missing out on the movies, so stop weeping into your lacy hankies, ladies

Replacements for damaged products only? I have a hard time believing they'd sell and ship just the outer box and book to those who purchased the other titles separately. I finally ordered Cronos and The Devil's Backbone during the recent B&N Sale, opened them, and then the boxed set was announced only 2 days later.. Assuming the set is just the 3 releases slid into a slipbox.. What are the actual odds of being able to contact them and get the additional pieces?

Pan's Labyrinth and Boyhood for me. I must say that when I read Richard Linklater, I immediately thought it was The Before Trilogy before I knew it was Boyhood. Not that Boyhood isn't great but I really want the trilogy.

Finally decided to take advantage of the sale at Barnes & Noble! I got:

The Seventh Seal
Weekend
Videodrome
The New World
Paris, Texas
Fantastic Mr. Fox
8 1/2

Now up to 20 titles! So many great ones I still need to get, but thought I'd get some of the basics. Also looking forward to Boyhood.

Hopefully Del Toro is wrong, I really hate the concept of limited editions.

I get that you will still be able to buy the films separately, but nowhere in the description of the box set it says it is limited, it uses words as Deluxe and Collectors which have not been used for other box sets I think, but still if this is something new they should clearly mark it.
