Yeah I fell asleep and had to rewind a bit and that is a pet peeve of mine. So I turned it off, got some water and by the time I got into bed I was staring at the celing. I checked out the Criterion thread on my phone and posted.

Finished it this afternoon. Still LOVE it. Still confused by my love of McCabe & Mrs. Miller.

It likely is, but it's a discontinued release (those sometimes get clearanced out), so it's less likely to ship.

If you've loved two of the films you've seen and enjoyed another few, I think your original post - that you "hated" Altman - may need revising. You clearly don't.

I blind bought The Road Trilogy and I'm watching Kings of The Road right now for the first time.

I just witnessed what may be the most disturbing thing I have ever seen in a movie.

Did that just happen?

Did I just see that?

Nein!

Neinnnnn!!!!!!!!!!

What the FREAK JUST HAPPENED?!!

I feel like throwing up.

I may never recover from this.

Talking about falling asleep at a movie, was watching Carnival of Souls and while the atmosphere is good, it was almost the only good thing I could say about it along with the main character performance, that music though, I could hardly maintain awake when the music starts.

At times it reminded me of Last Year at Marienbad except that one was much more interesting to me.

What evidence do you have that it won't ship out? This is for the Duel-Disc release, it's not discontinued. The single disc edition is the one that's OOP.

Are you just watching the older transfer/DVD or did you get an early access to the Criterion blu ray, which is why you're posting this?

And speaking of that, what's up with no reviews on McCabe? The first reviews should've been out over a week ago, which is when reviewers get their early blu ray review copies, right? Yet there are no reviews for McCabe on any site, including this one, even though it's a relatively big title. Weird.

I'm not that big on "MASH". It's a good film, but I definitely rank it outside of his top 10. I think "Brewster McCloud" is kind of a continuation of the heavily satirical bent of "MASH", and then Altman really hit his stride as the 70s went on. But I think that's what makes Altman the most enjoyable American director to really study of the last 30-40 years. He dabbled in so many genres and experimented so much that very few will likely ever have the same rankings of his films.

I think, if I remember correctly, I KEEL YOU is pretty high on "Quintet", which I am too, which some consider one of his worst films. There are very few filmmakers who can have that kind of polarization within their own filmography. Godard is a bit like that. I love "Pierrot Le Fou", but just have never enjoyed "Band of Outsiders". I've talked to people who feel the exact opposite. I think directors who don't have that easily defined "top 3" or even "top 5" are the most fun to discuss.

You remembered correctly: I friggin LOVE Quintet and would pay $50 for a blu ray release of it.

And I agree, you can kind of split Altman's filmography in two:

There are films like Quintet and 3 Women, and then he made films like Nashville and Short Cuts. I don't think there are many people or even downright Altman fans who enjoy both of these types equally.

I don't think that's the dual format release since the details do not mention it being anything more than a blu-ray, and the CC dual release has its own entry here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/breathle...skuId=23052814

The listing that you link also states that it is an import release.

I'm thinking of getting Carnival of Souls BD, but I'm not familiar with Criterion price policy. My questions:

1. Do they usually have yearly (or any kind of) sale/discount on Amazon? If they do, when do they usually have it?

2. What's the lowest price drop for their BDs on Amazon: can it be under $25?

I'm a very patient guy when it comes to buying Criterion titles, so I could wait as long as it takes

Appreciate your reply.

You can buy it right now for $19.99 from Barnes & Noble. Their biannual 50%-off Criterion sale is on.

Periodically Barnes & Noble and Criterion themselves hold 50% off sales for all released Criterion titles, so you can order then. Or if you are restricted to Amz for any reason, it is often seen that Amz's prices drop significantly near the time of the B&N sales, so it could go as low as 20$ or thereabouts.

Edit: Russ beat me to it and he has great news for you as well

A lot of Altman films have sort of "bumper" bits, recurring throughout to give you a downbeat in between sequences... I kind of think of any time "The Company" goes into the characters as just like when Radar comes on in "M*A*S*H", and that it's run-of-the-mill because it's not her *real* life, the stuff on stage is, along with all the backstage stuff she has to suffer through. At the same time, even with all of that defense, I don't think it's as good as the other two I mentioned it in the same breath as.
I don't rate Altman highly after Short Cuts. The Company has that ugly primitive DV look from that time that I find instantly offputting, and the film didn't engage me at all.

As for consensus on Altman, it appears to work that his best work was done in the 70s, with few exceptions. Fans tend to differ on what those exceptions are.

Quintet is hard to judge because I've never seen a good copy of it, but it seemed like a failed experiment to me.
