And just think...if Alexandria Daddario's rack had "accidentally" spilled out while she was swimming underwater, San Andreas might have challenged Vertigo and Citizen Kane for the top spot on Sight & Sound's "Top 100 Films of All-Time" list in 2022. An opportunity missed. Or two, depending on how one looks at it.

I've always felt that the Academy Awards should have a special award for best cleavage in a movie.

...such an underrated aspect of filmmaking.

Oh, I saw it when it was first aired. They're real, and they're spectacular! She's ridiculously hot.

The first season was sensational. Haven't watched the second one, though I'll get around to it. It wasn't nearly as good, according to critics. But, I really like Rachel McAdams, so I will check it out once Ray Donovan has finished this season.

Yes, that would be hyperbolic. But nobody said that.

I saw BerryTheMusicMan's pic of Criterions. I just watched Robinson Crusoe On Mars for the first time on Netflix. I ended up really liking it.

Placed my second B&N sale order earlier today -

Make Way For Tomorrow

Make Way For Tomorrow was a totally random blind buy bc Carnival of Souls is still OOS online. I dont believe Ive heard anyone discuss or really even mention it. Does anyone have any insights/opinions/comparative thoughts as in what other movies it reminds you of?

It's out on BD in Germany, in a 2-pack with the sequel, Saraband. Not sure the quality, but an HD master exists in some form.

I guess Tokyo Story is similar to Make Way For Tomorrow, I've yet to watch that one though.
I think Make Way For Tomorrow is a superb movie, one of only two movies to ever make me cry.

Splitting hairs? You did say the the "two hot lesbos getting it on" was "a big part of why the film is so loved by many."

I watched Here Comes Mr. Jordan last night. I enjoyed it. It is a very easy / light watch which is what I often look for on a weeknight. I did think, however that Ride The Pink Horse was better.

I didn't feel that the sentimentality was over-played. It's part of the story, but the fantasy and comedy elements seem to be a bigger part of the film.

Make Way For Tomorrow is a shorter, non subtitled version of Tokyo Story. While Tokyo Story is my #4 all-time movie, I'll never get any of my friends or family to sit down and watch it. MWFT gets across some of the same themes in a more compact way. I still have MWFT in my top 30.

If you're a sucker for sappy, family dramas like me, then it is a must have.

I watched An Autumn Afternoon last night. It seemed to be a collage of several Ozu's prior films hitting on familiar themes: family, marriage, commercialism, post-war, etc. It was difficult to see it as a stand-alone film especially after recently seeing Late Spring.

I thought Tokyo Story, Late Spring, and Good Morning each zeroed in on its theme specifically and in greater depth. Autumn Afternoon was more like a compilation film to me. Ozu skimmed the themes and made a wonderful film...just not on the level of Tokyo Story (10/10) and Late spring (9/10) for me. 8/10

If you don't see a difference between stating that something is 'a big part' and it being the only reason ('it only has a lot of love over boobs') I don't know what to say.

Just to throw another 2 cents possibility : I love both Blue Velvet AND Mulholland Drive, and would have a hard time telling which one I like more.
But I also like a lot Lost Highway and am relatively indifferent to Eraserhead.

Good Morning? Seriously? That is one of Ozu's most lightweight films. An Autumn Afternoon has a sense of finality about it. It's one of the great final films of cinema. I'd suggest revisiting it in the future.

I agree with you assessment of An Autumn Afternoon. I’ve said this before, but its grace and poignancy really sneak up on you towards the end. It is, as it definitely is in Tokyo Story for comparison, very subtle.

I don’t think the merits of Good Morning should be sold short, though, either. It has strong themes as well.

Went into FYE and expected to see the same old copy of Ace in the Hole on DVD, but there was also a used Blu-ray copy of Mystery Train for $20. Worth it?
