I love the interface of FilmStruck, very slick. The iPad app is a little buggy and has hung or crashed a few times. I was also not able to play any movies last night, but some of the extras did play fine. Will try again today. I can post some pics and first impressions on here if anyone is interested.

Would someone mind to recommend a few Criterion horror titles for me before the sale ends? So far I have Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, The Brood, Videodrome and Scanners in my collection. Not really in to B&W films unless they are legit R rated by modern standards. Is there something I really shouldn't pass on?

There's probably about 150-200 (maybe more) films available right now from what I can see. They have Kurosawa featured on the main page, and it shows that 24 of his films are available. Notably missing is Seven Samurai. They don't have any Ozu films from what I've seen.

Here's a small selection of what they have to give you an idea:

Three Colors
(6) Bergman films (Wild Strawberries, Persona, Seventh Seal, The Magician, All These Women, The Devil's Eye)
(13) Truffaut films (Soft Skin, The Last Metro, 400 Blows, Love on the Run, etc.)
(6) Cassavetes Films
A Room with a View
Breaker Morant
A Hard Day's Night
Primary
F is for Fake
Tanner '88

edit: See post above I guess

I think you've mostly covered the ones that fit your tastes, but here's some others you may want to look at:

Rosemary's Baby - Classic psychological horror
The Vanishing - more psychological horror/thriller, but it scares me
House (Hausu) - weird as hell horror
The Devil's Backbone - I've yet to see it
Cronos - not particularly scary, but a good Halloween time title
Kwaidan - classic Japanese horror anthology, beautifully filmed. Not relly scary, but sometimes creepy.

I had a feeling I was overlooking something obvious and the Polanski films were exactly that. I will look out for Rosemary's Baby and Repulsion.. Thanks!

In addition to MifuneFan's great recommendations, I'd add Don't Look Now. If you decide to take a chance with a B&W, I'd go with Eyes Without a Face. Both have nice Gothic Horror elements in them.

Both seem very interesting.. thanks for the recommendations and I will definitely be on the look out. I love that Don't Look Now is set in Venice (one of my favorite destinations)

Happy to see Madadayo is on FilmStruck. Would love a Criterion blu of that.

Does it separate the films from TCM and Criterion, or are they all lumped together?

I might be wrong, but I think it only has stuff from Criterion right now

edit: Upon further examination, it does have just a few non Criterion stuff too, but it does not appear to be separated.

So it looks like it's mostly Criterion content. I was hoping for a mix of Hollywood classics. but with more movies like Tom Jones, it could be interesting. FilmStruck is still a no-go for me until they get a Roku app or I get a Firestick.

I suppose that will make it harder to determine what unreleased stuff Criterion has the rights to based on what's streaming.

I thought it was pretty impressive. If you have any interest in Asian cinema, I would imagine it would be a worthwhile purchase.

I thought from the initial press releases that there really wasn't going to be any TCM classic Hollywood content, it was mainly going to be Criterion, and other arthouse films.

Film quality looks very good on the iPad, all things considered. I took this screenshot, and realized it matched up pretty well from one in this site's 8 1/2 BD review, so I resized the BD one to match it:

Yes, but I guess it depends on your definition of "arthouse." Movies such as Sunset Boulevard, His Girl Friday, or even Lawrence of Arabia have been screened at arthouse cinemas. Imagine a service that could stream both Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven. How cool would that be?
