Default Brooklyn

Has anyone seen Brooklyn (2015)?

I watched it yesterday and fell in love with it. I rarely give movies a perfect rating but Brooklyn just resonated with me in ways unlike most movies I watch. My heart ached for these characters.

So if you've seen it, what are your thoughts on it?

I post this here because Paramount apparently has no intention of releasing the film on blu-ray. The film's recent restoration and screening with Fathom was done to promote the availability of the film in HD on i-tunes.

Criterion has a relationship with Paramount and Warner Brothers (Paramount's distributor of some films). There's gotta be something done to get this on blu-ray from Criterion or from somebody.
Paramount no longer as a relationship with Warner. But since Criterion has a relationship with Paramount it could possibly happen at some point. Perhaps other films like Hud, Paper Moon, The Miracle of Morgan's Creek and A Place in the Sun could finally get a BD release also.

I love long books - I just finished Martin Chuzzlewit which at 800 pages took me months! I think the longest book I've read is Richardson's Clarissa - 1600 pages. It was great!

Excellent film - Ronan gives a great performance, it is very moving and joyous and has a beautiful 50s style.

Default Alice In The Cities / Jim Jarmusch

Another thought on Alice In The Cities

While watching it, I kept thinking how the film reminded me of Jim Jarmusch (of course, Wenders’ film came first,) but was reluctant to say so because I thought maybe I was feeling that just because Jarmusch and what his style is like came up here in conversation a week or so ago; it was fresh in my mind. I just read Pro-B’s review on the site here and he observed the same thing. So, to diskspinner or anyone else curious about Jarmusch, if you’ve seen Alice In The Cities, you’ll have a good feel about what to expect with Jarmusch.

Me too, actually it was one of the movies I least wanted to see from the Oscars just based on the trailer and was pleasantly surprised, was one of the top from last year.

The classic film I want most on Blu-ray is A Shot in the Dark, but MGM doesn't seem to be interested in doing anything Shout related. Hopefully Criterion, Shout or Kino can make a deal with MGM.

I still need to see Brooklyn. I'm not sure how I'll react, but there has been so much positive reaction, and I love Ronan.

Loved it too...

Anyways - back on topic, has there been any murmuring if and when "Tales of Hoffman" (last year's 4K restoration) will get released Stateside? Or are the rights no longer held by Criterion?

I watched Branded To Kill last night on Hulu.

That is one of the strangest movies I have ever seen.

It's just so...odd.

Furthermore, their films probably feel similar because several of them were shot by the same cinematographer, Robby Müller.

Same here. I've been meaning to see it for a while. Maybe it's the Irish in me but Saoirse Ronan is really easy on the eyes.

Hey ya'll, thinking of making another Criterion purchase and I'm gonna blind buy a Samurai film. Roshomon is sold out, I'm thinking of either Harakiri or Kagemusha. Any thoughts? Thanks

I received my copy of Mystery Train...I have not watched Alice in the cities but I watched Kings of the Road. I will probably watch Mystery Train this weekend and get an idea about Alice in the cities...

It's there in my wishlist for this sale, should I remove it or keep it?

I think many here, including myself, consider Harakiri a masterpiece, so I'd say that.

Very tough to say.

It's so weird, that it could go either way.

At times it feels somewhat serious, while at other times it feels like a gonzo-style parody of a Yakuza film. I would say go for it and be prepared for the madness and don't fight it.

...but I cannot accept responsibility for what happens to you.
