Maybe throw in Shoah while I'm at it. But one giant step at a time.
I've seen Shoah once, and that was enough. For me anyways.

Good, keep it that way. The more money spent on physical media, the better.

I've just seen bits of it a long time ago when it was originally aired on public television. Need to change that.

Gilliam has every right to be happy that he got his way with the film HE co-wrote and directed (you know, did the actual work on?).
Who gives a shit if he was one of the higher ups, he made an incredibly stupid decision and just about ruined the film. If Gilliam had been wrong his cut wouldn't have ever seen the light of day.

Chaplin was always more of a dramatist who hid behind a comedic veneer to please audiences. But his crowd pleasing tendency sometimes got in the way of his more artistic and cultured leanings.
I'd probably agree with this, but I think Limelight seems more honest because it's more of a self reflective piece. He couldn't have made it in the 30's.

City Lights and Modern Times are his standout silents. They seemed more ambitious and mature. The Gold Rush is extremely overrated.

This may be a dumb question, but do Criterion have a bunch of spare cases for The Third Man left? I own the digipack but it is not in good shape anymore.

How right you are...thank you. I was just able to order Monsoon Wedding to complete my cart checkout (along with The Royal Tenenbaums and Darjeeling Limited too) to wrap my Criterion haul. I ordered 8 titles on my prior order, which now makes 11 total for this sale.

if it were 2 girls on a boat, maybe, but this picture is very specific about the baby and the guy on the speaker phone

I think people at Criterion Forums correctly guessed it as Bringing Up Baby?

I would absolutely love for it to be that, but how does guy with the megaphone factor into that?

If it's that, that is now two Cary Grant newsletter clues in a row, assumung the last was for His Girl Friday (which I'm sure it is).

Yeah, it doesn't seem to be. I'm stumped myself.

He's using the megaphone to "bring her up" and off the riverbank

Keep in mind the designs of the characters. They have to resemble some actors, no?
