Silly question time: Those of you who've purchased boxed sets, do you display them on the shelf with the closed end of the box showing or with the open end of the box showing and the spines exposed? An inquiring mind wants to know.

I don't think it's a silly question. I display them with closed-end showing.

I go spines exposed. Just like seeing the individual titles. I do this particularly because I want to know that "Drive, He Said"/"A Safe Place" double feature is always there for me in tough times.

I don't mind "Drive, He Said" that much. I've seen it twice and it's not very good, but there are some decent elements to that movie. The performances of the two leads (the basketball player and his roommate) are a real problem. Bruce Dern is excellent though as always and the film has some interesting statements about the 60s social movements. I wish Nicholson could have acted in it in some capacity. I know that the lead actor needed to be decent at basketball, but his performance is pretty awful. I watched the movie "Bachelor Party" with Tom Hanks and I noticed his brother is played by the lead in "Drive, He Said". Only other time I've seen him.
I've watched "A Safe Place" twice and it didn't improve for me on the second viewing. Not a fan of Henry Jaglom's films at all. "Tracks" with Dennis Hopper is alright, but still manages to incorporate moments of Jaglom cringiness. Jaglom always makes me think, "What if Woody Allen really sucked and had no comedic sense?" Then, he would be Henry Jaglom. I love Woody, but Jaglom is kind of what Woody would be if he didn't have a lot of talent. |

If the box has a spine number, I leave the open end out until I'm finished with all the discs, then I turn it around and put the closed end out. If the box doesn't have a spine number (America Lost and Found) I leave the open end out.

Any reason for the delay? I figure they spotted a screw up that'll take time to fix, but still, I wonder what it is... |

With the B&N Criterion sale winding down, can anyone make recommendations? Here's a list of titles I do not already own. I've seen a couple of these, but are there any titles here that anyone is really passionate about or feel is an overlooked gem in cinema history? Thanks!

The Big City: I guess you already seen the Apu Trilogy? this is a no brainer if you enjoyed those, personally my favorite Ray film. Night and the City: One of my favorites film noir films. The Organizer: More drama than the typical Italian comedy, but it balances it well, it also has a smaller price tag. The Thin Blue Line: Easily one of the best documentaries I have seen. Black Orpheus: One of the greatest soundtracks in the collection. The Naked Island: While not silent, it plays almost like one, with a great musical score. Fish Tank: Well it has Michael Fassbender, the girl is amazing too. Summer Hours: Such a great family drama, with a very relatable story. The Music Room: just because... More Ray is always welcome. Lonesome: Again with the silent's you can't miss this if you are fan of something like Sunrise (1927) |
