It goes by spines. The list is official in that it's coming directly from criterion.com (Show Criterion+Blu-ray then set your browser to no page style. It will show a count of films by director in descending order). I did remove D.A. Pennebaker because he got credit 3-4 times for Monterey.

it is coming from number or releases (boxes are 1, so are individual titles) and not spines because the individual films in a box are given spine numbers, too.

It must be because they were released on blu-ray at the same time (as one set), 'cause part 1 of the set was released on DVD some years before part 2 (hence the big disparity in spine numbers).

Jeanne Dielman is in there. And if you count Eclipse sets, they each have one. But both of those are on my list of most-anticipated upgrades. I absolutely love the Varda in California Eclipse set, and have been waiting for the mainline set to get upgraded since. And Beau Travail is one of my fantasy releases... |

Agnes Varda has two box sets and Jane Campion has releases for An Angel at My Table and Sweetie. Also, I'm not sure what the lack of a blu-ray upgrade for Agnes Varda has to do with under representation of women in the collection. I agree that there are a lot of great films directed by women but sometimes life is so much more than gender. Meaning that it's pretty far-fetched that Criterion is somehow avoiding releasing films by women. Criterion is prone to releasing a lot of classic world cinema where women have only made a small percentage of the works in whole. Chantal Akerman has one release in the form of Jeanne Dielman as well as Barbara Kopple. |

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I meant to say we don't have enough of their films on CC Bluray. They've been neglected in the HD era But yes, I'm totally down for some more Denis as well. Her films are too visually significant to have but one bluray release. Beau Travail is one. The Intruder is another. Last edited by Abdrewes; 08-09-2016 at 09:13 PM. |

Really wish Criterion would start unloading the massive amount of Japanese films they have the rights to that have never had a DVD/Blu-Ray release in the U.S. as it's a staggering amount. Especially the Hideo Gosha films. How I dream almost every day of these finally getting a release.

Cure - Kuorsawa The Demon - Nomura The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice - Ozu Floating Clouds - Naruse Gonza the Spearman - Shinoda Profound Desire of the Gods - Imamura Silence - Shinoda Utamaro and His Five Women - Mizoguchi Are all masterpieces on some level. Heck, Silence would be great to release close to Scorsese's adaptation. Cure is a personal favorite film, so this is my fantasy release (they wouldn't even have to change the cover art). Of course there are other great films to be had, but Japan offers a really sizable presence. |
