You know, I saw the quote, and misread it as July 206.. I thought the quote was from a month ago. I now see this was being worked last year. Big difference.

Glad to hear it looked great, thank you! Less waiting is good, too.

I'm very excited for this. Now, if Warner would release The Philadelphia Story and Bringing Up Baby, I will be AFI 100 complete*.

* There are 77 films that appear on both the 1997 and 2007 AFI 100 lists and 74 have been released on blu. Duck Soup will be number 75.

You know, I watched Double Indemnity again last night, and, I have to say, my love for Barbara Stanwyck is growing at an exponential rate. She was such a marvelous actress.

I was looking at her filmography available on blu-ray, and, sadly, it's lacking. One of her best films is actually under license by Criterion, The Lady Eve, a romantic comedy with Henry Fonda. Would any of you guys be up for purchasing this if Criterion were to upgrade it?

Hell, yes! My love for Preston Sturges aside, Barbara Stanwyck is probably my favorite actress of all time and I think it's a shame that she didn't do more comedies. She had such a flare for it, but I think I read an interview of hers where she said that after a certain point, they (Hollywood) stopped making intelligent comedies, so she stuck to dramas after that.

So, yes. In addition, please give me Ball of Fire and Lady of Burlesque.

I love her in dramas, too, like Baby Face and Miracle Woman.

Ball of Fire looks even better compared to its remake.

Would be a day one purchase for me. Adore that film. Second the notion for more Stanwyck - Stella Dallas, please.

It's great to see so many Barbara Stanwyck fans! She was an extraordinary talent, and I look forward to experiencing more of her body of work.

I've slowly been compiling some of her films on my DVR to do a mini marathon. Anytime I see TCM playing one of her films, I mash the record button down on my remote until I see that glorious little check mark appear on the guide. Besides the aforementioned The Lady Eve, I've also got Clash by Night, and The Man with a Cloak. The Two Mrs. Carrolls is showing on Saturday during TCM's Bogie tribute.

TCM is doing an Anne Baxter 13-film tribute today, and I've got my DVR going. Oddly enough, The Magnificent Ambersons isn't one of them. Grr. But I Confess is coming up in about an hour, iirc, and I've never seen it. That is one I'll look forward to tonight, especially after watching Hitchcock/Truffaut on HBO the night before last. I love All About Eve, and I drool like Pavlov's dog whenever I see her as Nefretiri in The Ten Commandments. But seriously, how could one man, even Moses, choose between Baxter and Yvonne de Carlo? My God, Charleston Heston had his hands full.

They're also playing The Razor's Edge, which I have not seen. I can knock a film off my "too see" list for both Anne Baxter and Gene Tierney!

Why is it like this? Is it supposed to be like this? Has this happened to anyone else before? Please tell me. I'm not opening, as I want a replacement case and cover, so I will have to wait before watching Naked Lunch for a while.

P.S. Yes, that's me on the right of the image. And sorry about the framing, and how it's mirrored. Photo Booth on my laptop is rubbish for this sort of thing.

EDIT: If you can't see the photo, the case is a standard U.S. case, slim, blue coloured, and the short plastic cover holder.
No, my friend, that's not how "Naked Lunch" is supposed to be packaged. If it's more convenient for you, I would take the disc and the packing slip to a brick and mortar store and ask for an exchange. Sorry that happened to you!

I'm guessing that the Lone Wolf and Cub movies will receive top treatment even with multiple movies per disc, just as the Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman movies did.

I just pre-ordered from Amazon earlier today, and, to get the free shipping, I ordered a second copy of the debut album by Crystal Castles, since my current CD has been roughed up from too many road trips.

I have a funny memory involving the Shogun Assassin cut, by the way...

Shogun Assassin aired on a local cable channel on "Kung Fu Theatre" during the early 1980s, when I was in sixth grade, and I quickly became immersed in the film. For some odd reason, the cable channel was showing this movie completely uncut, with decapitations, artery sprays, and all, and I had never seen anything quite like it. I sat there on the floor in front of the television with my jaw hanging open.

My parents walked into the room during the scene where the female ninjas kill the strongest male ninja in an army, and they freaked out about the violence. They got angry, turned the television off, and told me to go play outside.

Later that night, though, after everyone had gone to bed, I caught an encore showing of Shogun Assassin, and watched it in its entirety.

Yes, although my top movie love will always be Gene Tierney, Barbara Stanwyck runs a close second. Of Stanwyck's 87 films and TV movies, I have all but six of them in my library (I'm missing Broadway Nights, her silent debut, which no longer exists; Mexicali Rose; Red Salute; The Plough and the Stars; Variety Girl; and The Letters), and I've managed over the years to collect most of her television work, too, including a copy of the unaired pilot to the proposed TV series Calhoun: County Agent.

Stanwyck was truly a chameleon. I can't think of any other actress of her generation who could be so hysterically funny (The Lady Eve), so diabolically evil (Double Indemnity), so heartbreakingly sentimental (Remember the Night), so wantonly sexy (Baby Face), so breathtakingly cynical (Meet John Doe), or so quietly decent (My Reputation). She knew instinctively when to take a scene over the top (her denunciation of her father's church in The Miracle Woman), and when to scale it back effectively (her quiet admission to Clifton Webb in Titanic that one of their children is "not your son."). Her filmography is studded with memorable moments to treasure, and I can honestly say that although some of the scripts she tackled were pretty much garbage (Illicit, and Escape to Burma come to mind), that she elevated them through her artistry and made them watchable.

I would love to see more Stanwyck in the Criterion Collection: Capra's The Bitter Tea of General Yen would be a good choice, as would Remember the Night (TCM's blu-ray seems to be OOP now, although the DVD is still available), and of course we deserve an upgrade of The Lady Eve. Hopefully, we won't be kept waiting too much longer ...

Most definitely!! I love The Lady Eve and would welcome an upgrade. I place Stanwyck along the ranks of Katerine Hepburn and Bette Davis. Not many actresses can offer us film lovers a 50+ year career in film. They all did, yay.

I'm very impressed with your passion of the Golden Age of Hollywood actresses and your completist collecting habits. I've read many of your posts on Gene TIerney. Fell in love with her as a wee lad of 15 and IMO she is the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.
I've managed to collect 80% of her films. Bette Davis made 101 films, managed to collect all but one and I scourge Ebay looking for it.

Jennifer Jones is another favorite, have every single one of the 24 films she made. Stanwyck is my late bloom love and I'm currently in the collecting throes of discovering her output. I absolutely love your description of her acting style.

I wouldn't go as far to say its awful artwork. I think it captures the mood quite fittingly. It's an intimate cover to say the least. And I sort of like what they did around the titles using that overexposure to add a bit of "intoxication". I like it!

What are your thoughts on La Notte?

I re-watched it last night and I didn't like it as much as I recall liking it on my initial viewing.

I found it to be the weakest of Antonioni's trilogy. I think a lot of my criticism, as usual, has to do with my connection to the characters. Whereas the other two films in the trilogy have more ambiguity surrounding the loneliness and alienation of the protagonist, this one seemed more direct. Also, I had much more difficulty caring for their loneliness or the things they said to one another in their conversations than in the other two films.

I like how the film deals with external façades and fame dictating and ruining a person's life. I have a hard time believing that
[Show spoiler]Giovanni loves Lidia
by the end of the film.
[Show spoiler]Giovanni
, in my opinion, went from
[Show spoiler]loving his life to his status
while
[Show spoiler]Lidia
continued to
[Show spoiler]love Giovanni throughout, realizing as her friend is on his deathbed that she should have been with him from the beginning. Nevertheless, she never stooped low to cheat on her husband unlike what he did to her.
