That's a shame, because I feel the same way. When a film like this is marketed and advertised and overplayed so many times if you're growing up in the era that film was released, then you end up being burned out by the publicity and hoopla surrounding the movie.

Even now, over 10-15 years later, I can't listen to any of my Oasis CDs for example, because I played their music thousands of times when I was a teenager. The same goes for certain other bands or artists.

I haven't watched Titanic since the 1990s but I'd be willing to revisit that epic film again. I just think the sappiness of the whole love story between DiCaprio and Winslet might have been a bit over the top... but who knows, maybe it just makes the whole event more heartbreaking when you personalize the tragedy like that, the way James Cameron did with his script/story.

James Cameron doesn't direct many films any longer, but the ones he makes are life-changing as well as world-changing. He's a true innovator if there ever was one.

Oh, and happy belated birthday to James Cameron, who turned 62 a couple of days ago.

My b-day happens to be tomorrow too. Cameron and I are both Leos born in the Chinese year of the Horse!

Subtitles on foreign films are an interesting conundrum.

I was watching Godard's Weekend last night and there were a couple of scenes where the characters are delivering monologues, while at the same time being intercut with a series of phrases on screen. In those situations they can only transcribe the dialogue, which means any non-French speaking viewer will miss out on the rest.

I've had similar thoughts while watching Robert Altman films like Nashville, which tend to utilize overlapping dialogue between multiple groups of people in a scene.

How exactly would they handle that in terms of subtitles?

...I assume that non-English speaking viewers would miss out on a lot.

Celine Dion will haunt you for the rest of your life.

At work.

When you sleep.

When you're in the bathroom.

When you're in the shower.

...all the fookin time.

For those who can't abide Celine Dion's "My Heart Goes On", try Elvis Presley's cover of it:

I found it to be an excruciatingly schmaltzy overlong romance with terrible dialog and the CGI is far from impressive (which was true even when it came out). And of course it won an Oscar for Best Special Effects.

Robert Altman on Titanic:

Quote:
Titanic I thought was the most dreadful piece of work I've ever seen in my entire life. Another film that I think is equally bad was American Beauty. So badly acted and directed. But people like that.
So note to all you people that sort by genre: Don't place Short Cuts and Titanic together in your disaster films section.

In all seriousness, I saw James Cameron's Titanic at the theater back in 1997, and, while I found it to be an engaging movie with flawless special effects and attention to historical detail, I was also bogged down by all of the hype and of the overplayed soundtrack. There were also quite a few unnecessary padding sequences that stretched the movie out.

I've had a hankering to check out the movie again, though, to appreciate it on its own terms now that so much time has passed.

So much time has passed...

It just occurred to me that Titanic is almost 20 years old. Wow. I cannot believe how old we all are.

Fun fact: I'd rather watch Titanic every day for the rest of my life than suffer through Short Cuts once more.

...maybe that's a bit extreme considering how insufferable Titanic can be. Nevertheless, my dislike for Short Cuts still stands.

Funny, because a Popeye/Titanic/Short Cuts/American Beauty marathon sounds like heaven to me. It has to be one of the near perfect cinematic four course meals. Bread, veggies, meat, and dessert.

I always thought it strange that they waited 17 years before releasing a prequel to Raise the Titanic.

It seems like they could pretty easily do different subtitles for spoken and written text and make them clearly distinct. For one thing, you could do the dialogue in white and the written text in yellow. Or place it on-screen in a way that clearly indicates what it is.

With "Nashville", I'm not sure, but I'd imagine that the English subtitles that are on the disc could give you some idea of how it would translate.

Not quite the same, but during the recent B&N Criterion sale the Hamilton Original Cast Recording was on heavy rotation; three stores, multiple visits. Based on what I heard, it's hard to believe the show is permanently sold out and scalped at huge mark-ups.

Subtitling Godard has long been a source of great discussion and debate. Histoire(s) du Cinéma is a particularly notable example of tricky subbing, with text made up of various languages often on-screen at the same time, coupled with dialogue from films and separate narration all playing together.

Godard would later bring light to this idea of non-French speakers missing out with Film Socialisme, to which he assigned English subtitles in "Navajo English", at once both a parody of the complex use of language in his other work and a tribute to John Ford's westerns.
