Say whatever you want about Tom Cruise.

Personally I've never viewed him as a great actor, in the sense that great actors have the ability to pull off a diverse range of characters in a wide array of different films.

But give the man the right role and he's capable of producing some legitimate movie magic.

...see Top Gun if you don't believe me.

Or this little gem, which I watched last night for the first time in many years.

He should've won an Oscar for this imo.

Would make a great addition to the Criterion Collection, given the bare bones HD release it currently has.

Say what you will about the man's personal life, but Tom Cruise is a great actor.

His roles in Collateral, Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, Risky Business, and Vanilla Sky are his greatest performances.

I think that he almost steals the film in Tropic Thunder. He's also great in Rain Man.

Eh, I feel like people say this too casually. I mean, just look at what he was up against:

Daniel Day Lewis - My Left Foot
Morgan Freeman - Driving Miss Daisy
Robin Williams - Dead Poets Society
Kenneth Branagh - Henry V

Some stiff competition. I can't really argue against DDL's win. If he should have won for anything, it's Magnolia, where he was far and away better than everyone else, not to mention he had the clear attention-seeking scene to garner a win. Plus I think he has better material to work with than with Stone and Kovic's script.

The bottom three...no way...no contest against Tom's performance in Born.

I've never seen My Left Foot.

But I would have to judge it based on Robert Downy Jr.'s scientific criteria laid out in Tropic Thunder.

I think Born On The 4th of July is one of the best performances of the 80s.

...TC went full beast mode in that one.

Inspired Tokyo Story? I need to add Make way for Tomorrow to my next Barnes & Nobel sale pick up list.

There's a review of Cat People up on DVD Beaver, the screen shots look very good to me.

If they can get that good a result from elements that I'd read were a bit rough, surely they could do the same thing with the rest of the Lewton films. Come on Criterion, enough of these lame samurai movies, we want a Lewton box set

No, you wouldn't, because it doesn't apply here. You should see it.

Anyways, I think the criticism he often receives for chewing the scenery is a little too prevalent there, and I don't think Stone as a filmmaker serves him well. But that's a discussion for another place.

Yeah I hate scenery chewing.

...it's annoying.

How do you think Stone didn't serve him well as a director?

I think it's a brilliant film myself.

I get depressed every time I watch it.

Having no way to know for sure, obviously, I have a strong gut feeling that some of the more rocky candy sweet offerings are totally written with a sardonic undertone.

Lana Del Rey is kind of a pre-packaged version of Nicole Atkins, after her failed first style she sloppily ripped off the vocal style and look from her for Born to Die (and obviously became FAR more popular in the process due to being hotter and having a very modern sound instead of Nicole Atkins' wonderful retro stuff). She seems rather "corporate," which isn't surprising considering she started out as something else, and was funded by her incredibly rich father for the first album, her makeover into something more angsty, and the newer stuff. It's not bad considering what it is, but it lacks soul IMO. The fact she only co-writes her songs doesn't help. Born to Die is a good song. I'd avoid the sillier ones.

He wasn't bad in Oblivion and Minority Report either. Two solid sci fi films.

Nice. I have about 20 in common with you. On my Facebook page last year I created one myself so this may be a good moment to finally get a bit more involved on this thread since a large part of the films are, or were, in the collection. My only criteria for the list was that I had to own the film. In the order in which I shared them (I'm too lazy to do alphabetical )

I find it hard, difficult to make a top 100 favorite films. Someone try making a top 100 but directors cannot be repeated. For example, one film from Stanley Kubrick, etc.

Anyone else pick up Woman in the Dunes ? Amazing film. Still running through my mind after watching it last night. Strange, suspenseful, haunting and utterly engrossing. The minimalist soundtrack was exceptional as well as the great cinematography. Nothing in the film would make you think it was a low budget production.

Question; why is the BN sale so important/hyped?

I purchased a few things during the last sale (on bn.com, I don't live in the US), and I expected lower prices.

Everything was $20 each, and a lot of titles (popular ones) weren't even available.

The blu-ray Criterion prices are standard between $24 and $30 on Amazon, and you get faster shipping and much better customer service, plus there are WAY more titles and there is a lot more competition (which means you usually get to buy new CC titles for less via martket place sellers).

So why all the excitement? Overhyped sale, it's just a few $ off compared to other sites.
