I counted wrong. I've seen 51. Like Knaldskalle, I don't feel that I'm much into contemporary cinema and I hardly get to the theater any more. I would have figured, for sure, both jw and owl would have seen more than me.

no Koreeda, no Y Tu Mama... not good. but it serves its purpose like any other list. it gives us something to talk about for a bit.

We can all agree that it is certainly better than this.

Inception was supposed to be this clever multi-layered film (it just manages to make dumb people feel smart) and Interstellar was promoted as being scientifically accurate (it isn't and it doesn't even attempt to explain the temporal paradox it ultimately relies on).

Inception is probably the one that bugs me the most because the premise (the ability to "invade" dreams) could've made for one fantastic movie yet the whole thing is reduced to a slow motion shootout. For an idea of what can be done with the concept, go watch Satoshi Kon's "Paprika" and then imagine how that could've looked as a live action movie with some good CGI.
Personally, this is the vibe I get from people who make sweeping, dismissive statements about Inception (and the Paprika comparisons the discussion inevitably seems to invite) and Interstellar, rather than those who are particularly adamant advocates of either film. I never fully understood the huge love for The Dark Knight, though, and still feel it is the weakest of the trilogy, however all three are incredibly well-made films in particular and very impressive overall, in my opinion.

I'm rather surprised that I've seen 52 of the films on that list, as I, too, don't necessarily gravitate toward contemporary films.

Though, apparently I do...

I think I *do* gravitate toward contemporary films, which maybe is why I'm at 66.

Oddly a lot of the ones I haven't seen (Finding Nemo, Amelie, Wall-E, AI, Carol, Brooklyn, Inside Out) I would imagine are some of the more well seen films on the list. Apparently I don't see much Pixar stuff.

In the top 10 we also have Criterion releases In the Mood for Love (#2), Boyhood (#5) and Yi Yi (#8)! Also, interestingly enough, Inside Llewyn Davis is voted at #11.
I've seen 44. I need to see more films.

Can someone please give me a piece of advice regarding Dekalog?

A local theater is showing all of the films throughout September and on October 2nd are showing all of them in a row. However, before showing the first there is a 10:45am show of A SHORT FILM ABOUT LOVE. SHORT FILM ABOUT KILLING is NOT playing this day.

Now, would it matter if I went to see LOVE before going through the Dekalog films proper? Is it worth going out to see LOVE and KILLING in addition to seeing their respective shorter work?

You read my mind. Hirokazu Koreeda, along with Terrence Malick, are my two favorite directors working today. I was looking for Nobody Knows or Still Walking or even I Wish but...nothing. Heck, I would have accepted Air Doll if it was there. At least Malick was on the list.

I think it's great that Mulholland Drive got the top spot. I watched the first half of it last night, and of course, it's great.

Ok, I just finished watching Mulholland Drive. It truly is great. But, if you compare it to many other films from this millennium, it is the best of it so far. A lot of films today sum up everything in a nice bow, but this film makes you think. Sure, many other films on the Top 100 list made you think, but this one made you think hard. At first, I wasn't sure how to interpret the film, as there was so many ways to think of the film. Here's my version- MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
[Show spoiler]
[Show spoiler]Everything up to the point where Rita opens the blue box happened.
[Show spoiler]She did have amnesia. When she opened the box, it opened her mind, and she was able to remember everything that happened.
[Show spoiler]It also made her think about Diane's body in the apartment, and then she was able to put together what she did. And that's why Rita stayed with Betty throughout the movie- It reminded her of Diane, she just didn't know it yet.
[Show spoiler]And all the other weird people throughout the movie, they were just there. It's Hollywood, it's a crazy place!

I put spoilers around the spoilers so that it would be hard to open up everything, so that I would not ruin everyone's vision of the film. If you don't agree with me, give your interpretation below!

I can't say I necessarily disagree with anyone's take on the film, but at this point
[Show spoiler]I think everything up until the "box opening" or whatever is fantasy. The events may have happened in some fashion - as in her coming to LA to try and make it in Hollywood - but what the film shows is a glamorized fantasy or daydream version of how she imagined it was going to be before she came there. Kind of like how most people outside of Hollywood have some glamorized or idealized mystique of movie stars and the business. Then we're shown what became of her.
. I don't know, I've seen it about 8 times since its release, and my interpretation has changed about as many times. Definitely Lynch's masterpiece work.

I've only seen the extended version of Killing and I'm glad I didn't miss it. It is exceptional.

The feature versions of both LOVE and KILLING are major standalone works in and of themselves IMHO so I would say it is definitely worth seeing those in addition to the Dekalog.

Dekalog is a thematically unified work, but the individual films/episodes are discrete enough to work in any order. As for the two features, keep in mind that they were made and released a year before Kieslowski made any of Dekalog segments, so you can certainly see either of them before the rest. And yes, it's worth seeing the features in addition to the shorter versions.

I'm a big Nolan fan myself, but I suppose reasonable people are free to disagree.

Regarding Interstellar, MOST of the science is based on the research of renowned astrophysicist Kip Thorne, who was directly involved with the making of the film...and I'm more inclined to believe him than I am anyone else. No film about that kind of subject matter is going to be 100% accurate. But I think most of it is scientifically plausible.

The Dark Knight is the greatest superhero movie ever made imo. But calling it one of the greatest movies ever made, period...is a stretch.

Memento is about as smart as movie-making gets imo. Just a really great, mind-bending neo-noir.

The guy has made some great films in my opinion...even if his fanboys tend to use hyperbole from time to time.

The biggest problem with Nolan is undoubtedly his fanbase. I don't think Nolan himself has any delusions of grandeur but the IMDb boys certainly do.

I finally added The Man Who Fell to Earth to my collection today.

After years of searning (and not wanting to spend $400) I finally found a very affordable copy.

Very happy today.
