I watched Eating Raoul after being recommended through the Night of the Comet BD extras. It's quite fun.

Without the usual sale prices, these aren't as good as you'll see in a regualr BN full sale, but there seem to be a few items under $30 so still a decent price if you can't wait until November
Thanks for the code. I just picked up "A Panorama of American Film Noir" by Raymond Borde for $13.

I have been on a exploitation, Giallo, Euro Cult watching binge...so it was time for a change . Had the day off and just watched Gilda . As the movie's plot started to develop, I was thinking

[Show spoiler] Wenders is a virtuoso and the cinematography by Robby Muller is just superb. Bruno Ganz and Dennis Hopper are both unbelievably great in it. It starts off as kind of a rumination of Ganz's character trying to figure out how to cope with his illness and then turns into a dark buddy movie in the last half. The use of color, the way some scenes are lit by various degrees of neon light, create an almost surreal atmosphere. Wenders' interview in the supplements is one of the most insightful you'll hear from any director. His story of how he wanted to adapt a Patricia Highsmith novel is terrific. He inquired about adapting one of her novels, but found out he couldn't acquire the film rights to any of them. Then, he ended up visiting her at her home and she pulled out her latest manuscript, which her publisher hadn't seen, and said to Wenders that he could adapt that. That novel was "Ripley's Game".

Hopper's performance may be his best. In many of Hopper's best performances, that sense of menace is always at the surface. But in "The American Friend", he gives a fairly subdued performance for the most part, with the occasional maniacal outbursts that Hopper did so well. Hopper was of course going through legendary drug and alcohol problems in the 70s as well as the aftermath of the failure of "The Last Movie", so he really didn't act that much during that time. It's a shame because he was one of the more fascinating actors of recent memory. Even when he was in films that didn't match up with his talent level, he was always worth watching. In "The American Friend", he has a director and co-star who go toe to toe with him.
It is Ganz's morally-tortured turn that always gets me. And I rate it significantly higher than the Malkovich starrer Ripley's Game (2002) despite Ebert's relentless championing of the latter.

I personally like it better than Yi Yi. I know I'm in the minority now though. Not one person I know has ever dared criticize Yi Yi. Not even a smidge. (Waiting for "Because it's just that good!" posts...)
I thought Yi Yi was good, but not great.

Between that and A Brighter Summer Day, I just don't think I'm destined to be a big Edward Yang fan.

There's something missing there for me or something that I just don't get.

...I didn't feel that magic I felt the first time I saw Point Break.

I remember buying this, watching that same night and for some crazy reason was turned off so much by the content that I sold it the next day to a local record/video store. I obviously wasn't prepared for this dark comedy.

Ray, I hate to break it to you, but there aren't many films that will make you furiously pleasure yourself repeatedly for a 48 hour period the way "Point Break" does. They're just hard to find.

Sad but true.

Point Break has ruined a lot of great movies for me lately.

Last week I was watching The Emigrants/The New Land and I kept thinking to myself, "Man...this is just missing something. Maybe a skydiving scene or a bank robbery or a high-octane POV chase through the backwoods of rural Sweden?"

...it just needed something.

Ah yes, just like when I watch The Matrix and wonder why a movie like Hiroshima Mon Amour doesn't have more kung fu.

By the way, who else here has a pre-order of the newly restored Road House (1989)? I cannot wait. It's a fun movie that is just going to keep getting better and better as it ages.

That said, I was riveted when I watched The Emigrants and The New Land a couple of weeks ago.

Absolutely have it on pre-order. Had to upgrade the old bare-bones BD.

I'm glad that they ported over the Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier commentary track from the old DVD. That's probably the most amusing commentary track that I've ever listened to in my entire life. They're real fans of the movie, like me, but they also have a lot of fun with it.

I know exactly what you mean.

Watched In The Mood For Love last night and remember thinking that the whole relationship dynamic would've been a lot more interesting if the Tony Leung character had been a rebellious fighter pilot instead of a boring newspaper man.

Would've added an element of danger to the story.

Like man...will this guy be able to conquer his own inner demons in time to finally know what love is?

[Show spoiler]
