I watched about 45 minutes of 3 Women last night on Netflix and it was all I could take.
Does anything actually happen in this movie? Assuming I can summon the willpower to finish it tonight, I do not think this will end up being one of my favorite Altman films. ...I do not think that is a possibility. |

Out of the Past - Great choice, Owl. This film is a genre classic, also lensed by Nicholas Musuraca. John Bailey actually specifically addresses its visual style, and then compares the work of Nicholas Musuraca and John Alton (arguably the biggest of all noir cinematographers). Criterion should really routinely invite Mr. Bailey to do commentaries/reviews for them as he offers the type of detailed and professional analysis that very few people can do. ![]() |

Actually, most theatrical posters before the 1980s were folded.

I took my wife to see episodes 5 and 6 of the Dekalog yesterday afternoon. These are really fantastic films... Very 'cinematic,' if you will, despite the fact that they were made for TV. I had already seen these and episodes 1 through 9 via the Facets DVDs. To see these in HD was like seeing the difference between the old Pather Panchali DVD and the recent restoration.
The cinematography in episode 5 is very stylized. There's some really good use of light and shadow and just plain darkness as well. (Difficult for me to articulate on this particular effect, but you'll all notice it.) As for the content... It is, to me, pound for pound some of the most gripping 60 minutes of cinema I've seen. It is unrelenting, powerful, and it grabs you by the throat and does not let go. Really amazing stuff. Episode 6 is a 4 star episode as well, although it has its own rhythms, twists, and strong themes. I don't want to give away too much. I'd be surprised if these films are not voted 'release of the year.' |

I'll be interested to hear what you think after you finish it. "3 Women" is not a film that will inspire ambivalence IMO. You'll either love it or hate it by the end. It's the most enigmatic film I've ever seen along with "Last Year at Marienbad".

Huh. That works? I would have thought it would turn them brown! I have a bunch of folded posters, some of which I would like to put up, maybe I'll have to try that sometime. That Cat People one is sure great.
I'm worried about buying Cat People, cause it sounds like the documentary will send me down the path of having to buy all the Val Lewton DVDs. I currently have the Cat People double feature, and the Body Snatcher/I Walked with a Zombie one, but I don't really know anything about any of the others. |

[Show spoiler] and [Show spoiler] , and as in both of those movies, things get very, very different after the establishing situation is set up. Let's just say that I suspect 3 Women played a significant part in leading Kubrick to choose Duvall for The Shining.

So I finally watched my CC edition of Mulholland Drive and this movie never ceases to amaze me even if this is like my fourth watch in the past 10 years.
This was my first time watching in an ambient resembling a theater with very loud sound and big projection screen and it makes a big difference specially thanks tot he quality both in audio and video of this release. That club silencio scene always gets me, I don't know if it is common knowledge what the lyrics of the song are saying in Spanish but they immediately click with the plot of the movie even if at that moment you are not completely aware of the specifics of how it is going to resolve, it gives you a good idea and that moment makes the scene incredibly powerful, also of course it helps that the song is great and it is beautifully singed by Rebekah Del Rio. As for the supplements I've yet to watch two of the main interviews with Lynch and the actors, but so far they have been great, nice to see Lynch working on the set. |

The four you have, cakefactory are probably the best of the bunch, though The Leopard Man, at least, is on the same level, and perhaps Isle of the Dead as well. The other three are arguably lesser films, but only comparatively. |
