On my list for the flash sale. A big fan of "kitchen-sink" dramas - especially being a Brit and having (hopefully) an intuitive understanding of many of the social and cultural attitudes and situations that drive the narratives (although, as a child of the late-60's, I didn't grow up in the times reflected in the key films of the genre).

This is where it helps to be region-free, as great films like The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, and This Sporting Life are all available on BD - along with other titles on DVD.

They're are advertising it at a movie theater. I've seen it on the huge screen a couple of times.

Just picked up at Costco Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb and The New World. It's my first Terrence Malick film. Can't wait to watch it. Which cut should I watch? I usually prefer to watch the longest cut of a film if it includes multiple cuts.

I'm not sure I would recommend The New World for my first Malick film.

...but it is a beautiful picture.

It has been years since I saw Far From Heaven, but I remember liking that one better. Carol was quite a slog for me.
Yeah the music probably plays too many times or overpowers certain scenes, luckily I loved it paired with the scenes without dialog, I guess this is just one of those movies you have to be in a particular mood, it really got to me and I never felt it was trying to be something more than a simple love story, but I can see how the more artistic touches could irritate some people.

I know there are other films on the subject but this didn't feel to me like any others, It certainly is no better than Blue is the Warmest Color , but the style is so different that the comparison is meaningless, the main thing I liked about Carol wasn't even the love story part, the chemistry is not all there in my opinion, but I thought the period was brought to life very well (even though I never lived in that time ) the cinematography and sounds captured some very special scenes which gave quite an uncommon atmosphere.

I imagine, too, that this film could play better in a set-up like yours, as I recall that you have an HD projector. in a dark room with a big screen, it might be easier to submerse yourself into what's happening.

I can't remember the specific plot points, but
[Show spoiler] I actually felt bad for the husband. he tries to get the family together and she just kind of stiffs him. I understand why, but still...

See Far From Heaven. That has more of that lush, Douglas Sirk, 1950's technicolor look to it and is also about a taboo relationship.

Very classy presentation.

Just wait for it: someone will say it doesn't fit on their shelf or is not sturdy enough.

What do you mean? They couldn't be more related. They're all films by Guillermo del Toro, and they're all supernatural fantasies.

Yes, I know what you're getting at, but while "trilogy" usually refers to a set of three works that are connected textually, that doesn't have to be the case.

The first definition for "trilogy" at dictionary.com reads:

"a series or group of three plays, novels, operas, etc., that, although individually complete, are closely related in theme, sequence, or the like."

You're thinking of them only in terms of "sequence", not of "theme" or "the like".

Cronos might be a little more of a stretch, but PL and TDB are spiritual siblings for sure.

The GDT set looks gorgeous. It's frustrating that I already own Cronos and Devil's Backbone.

I know what you mean. I love the design, but can't bring myself to buying something when I already own all the movies. Would be nice if Criterion offered just the packaging.

Why not sell the currently owned copies on ebay, and put the funds towards the new release?

Has anyone here gotten into Guillermo del Toro's TV Show The Strain?

I notice the gothic accents and textures he uses for the cover artwork of this trilogy and it reminds me a bit of the graphic art for that show as well.

Cronos has little to do with those two films. I'm disappointed that Del Toro scrapped plans to make the 3rd and final installment to his proposed Spanish trilogy.

Didn't someone on here say that one could email Criterion and they could send you the box and artbook for a fee? I'm interested in this, but like others I already own Cronos and Devil's Backbone.
