I finally decided -- after YEARS of putting it off -- to upgrade my old DVD copy of The Double Life of Veronique. The time has come (and passed, frankly). I'm looking forward to it.

My birthday's coming up, and I'm going to decide then what to do about Dekalog. A present to myself.

I doubt it would be free :P you'd pay per piece.

The proper time to upgrade any Kieślowski film is immediately upon the Bluray release.

Yes, I realize this, and I realize that I am a failure.

I'm sure I've already beaten this drum in here but I think they all share a fairly strong underlying theme: people are the real monsters.

To me they're at least as strongly linked as something like Polanski's Apartment Trilogy

Regardles if it was his originally intended trilogy or not, GDT calls it his spanish language trilogy, and had been pining for Criterion to release Pan's Labyrinth for years, so all three could be together. That's the link to all three in this box set..

“You know we definitely have had that conversation with Criterion. They found a really good response to Devil’s Advocate and Cronos. It’s all in the hands of them being able to strike a deal with New Line and Warners for the film, but I would love nothing more than having that. That would complete the Spanish-language trilogy so far (laughs).”

I watch the show still. I really liked season 1, season 2 was ok, haven't watched season 3 yet, but it's on my TiVo.

I see the gothic accents in the show more when they are showing Abraham Setrakian's past. His sword really shows the influence, as does the architect in most of the buildings in the flash backs.

Has anyone here had any luck in getting the new Zatoichi packaging without any discs in it? I know Criterion will ship replacement packaging for a fee and I wonder if they would do the same with the slimmer Zatoichi set. I'd like to replace my old dual format set with the newer one.

I know it's early, but I'm already making my Flash Sale list. So far, as long as I can get on before they run of of stock, I'm in for:
  • Valley of the Dolls
  • Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (since sold out online currently at BN for 19.99)
  • Chimes at Midnight (my BN didn't have it when I had my last 20% coupon)
  • Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman (the blu-ray only set)
  • Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words
  • Night Train to Munich
  • Pan’s Labyrinth (if the sale is late in the month this time)

I'm assuming the Flash Sale is still secret, but 3 out 4 years the fall sale has been the last week in Sept or first in October so Oct 4 or 6th seem to be the most likely days. I guess the 11th is still the longshot.
Yeah I just checked about 30 mins ago for BTVOTD. Chimes never seems to be in stock at my local BN. The guy I talked to eve said, "I had no idea it would be this popular, I guess I need to order more copies." Doesn't look like he has, or maybe it's not his call.

And yeah, my past email receipts from the October Flash are the 1st and 6th. So not holding out for Pan's.

G. del Toro's mind is totally insane and that's a good thing. I feel like he's been to hell and back. It's possible he's also a genius to come up with such imagery and creatures and inject these monsters into a modern day viral pandemic doomsday drama series. Season 3 so far has been just "okay", however this past episode ("#5 - Madness) was exceptional in my opinion. I also liked how they showed the history in Setrakian's long life in Season 2.

What is the appeal with the 'Valley of the Dolls' movies? I saw one of the two films (can't remember which) ages ago and thought it was pretty bad. Granted, I saw it at a time when the lack of boobs in a film that had been advertised as so sexually overt had me disappointed.

Is Billy Jack next for Criterion?

Glenn Kenny's booklet essay offers some good insight into the value of the first (though its appeal, of course, is pretty subjective).

Speaking to the first movie's appeal specifically, it feels to me like a time capsule of certain sensibilities of its era, garnished with some superlative performances of historical interest (Sharon Tate's in particular -- she was a talented and sensitive performer who only played in a handful of movies -- and Patty Duke is brilliant as well). It's not necessarily what would universally be called a great film (I think it is, but I'm perverse), but it's an interesting one.

this will be a good read on the train ride home from the office today. thanks! normally, I wouldn't read something prior to seeing a film or in this case seeing it again, but for now, I'd say the likelihood of that happening is pretty slim.

seeing poor Sharon Tate would just give me creepy bad feelings, too, while watching this. I guess in a fashion similar to the one in which that dumb idiot ruined a great Beatles song.

well, he didn't ruin it. it still kicks a**, but you get my point.
