Our friend Tarrah got super pricey tix near the front of the stage as well as this tablet book with all 3 members of Sigur Ros signing it inside.

In keeping this conversation Criterion-related, what's your favorite Wes Anderson film?
Rushmore, with Tannenbaum, Life Aquatic, and Budapest close behind.

As for Sigur Rós,

[Show spoiler]Detroit set was identical to the past 8 or 9 shows, so no need to worry that you missed anything or got a truncated show. I saw those tickets with the photo books. Too rich for my blood!

Hate Weekend. The third section is embarrassingly bad.

[Show spoiler]I spent a good portion of the film fairly sure of the fact that her boyfriend on the other line is really only 3 doors away and is having an affair w/ a blonde haired woman. Correct me if I’m wrong, but in the first scene of the movie, doesn’t Kieslowski explicitly show this? I gather that one of his themes is that the young man (whose identity we discover later on in the film - an identity I accept, but nevertheless can only be accepted in a fictional universe. It is an identity I wouldn’t have been able to detect if I were to have 100 first watches) may as well have been her b/f, or could be her b/f if the universe had unfolded differently. You’re saying you understood all of that and processed it as KK perhaps intended?

How about White? I liked the vibe of this film and I liked the comedy, but
[Show spoiler]I let out a “wtf?” at the end of the film. What was the conversation about him travelling to Hong Kong (was it HK? It was an Asian city, but I don’t remember which) only to have him peering through binoculars at his funeral? I accept the ‘leaps’ that Kieslowski takes in this one because they run consistent throughout the film – how does he get so rich so quickly? what did he do to get rich? I think the answer to that is ‘who cares?’ don’t they say in the film that she was seen with him the last day he was alive? Huh? …and then she goes to prison for killing him? Again, I don’t think it is important and KK is taking some kind of leap here. But still, I think there could be answers possibly revealed during subsequent viewings. Or… maybe it is just, as cpinheiro mentioned, KK showing spilt milk just for the sake of showing spilt milk.
It's been a while so I can't remember the details, but I remember that even while not catching everything I didn't have a feeling like in other movies that I didn't get it, that feeling when a movie suddenly ends and you can't avoid feeling a bit disappointed.

For me the movies left me thinking about the themes and questions as opposed to thinking about what could the themes be or what is the meaning of it all.

In some movies this is not enough, but since the movies are so technically accomplished I don't have a problem, kind of like with Mulholland Drive.

with White, I was by no means disappointed - even though I figure there is much to gather in a second watch. with Red, I'm looking forward to a second watch and like I said - I might have read Ebert's review too early instead of letting it stew in my head for a little while.

"wtf?" when the film credits roll is usually a good thing for me, actually.

I enjoyed all three of these (I know it may not sound like it.) I do feel it a bit ironic that Dekalog, which was made for TV and was a bigger project in scope, feels more fine tuned, more focused. better, IMO.

So you've seen all the Dekalog already?

I haven't seen any, can't wait to watch that set, hopefully flash sale is tomorrow

Between that and the volume 2 of the Polish set, too many films to see already.

Totally agree.

Masculin Feminin is the JLG that slightly goes off the rails at the end...but it doesn't undermine what came before.

Speaking of which...My two favorite JLG 60s films are 2 or 3 Things and Masculine Feminin. The latter is the most visually stunning and heady of the lot, while the latter is the perfect balance of heady, rambly Godard and lite fun French Cafe Godard. It also has the best actor and actress suited to his material: Jean-Pierre Léaud & Chantal Goya.

We need them on blu asap!

Even though I already have Cronos and The Devil's Backbone, I might as well just purchase the boxset. It's beautiful. I'm careful with my stuff, too, so I'm not worried about the packaging and any potential mishaps it may cause.

It also looks like they re-pressed the discs; the Cronos and TDB discs aren't white, right?

Wasn't feeling it to be honest, will resume tomorrow. Completely different experience from Autumn Sonata, which I watched yesterday, and was completely drawn into.

Just finished Dekalog.

I just want to reiterate that this is the greatest thing ever committed to screen.

The only scene in the film that I absolutely don't like is the scene where the
[Show spoiler]two sanitation workers eat lunch while offering a verbal dissertation on Marxist philosophy as a cure for colonialism in Africa.

Or something like that.

I don't know...because it's so boringly pretentious that I often doze off midway through.

Other than that, it's an incredibly interesting film.

Are there any posters that are exclusive to Criterion that aren't available on their website anymore?

No Darjeeling on that list? Come on! That's my fave. of his films followed by TRT, GBH and TLA.

Eww, I think I'll just opt for the standalone case of Pan's Labyrinth, that would be far more handy. Since I already have De Toro's wonderful book Cabinet of Curiosities, I can do without the additional reading material in this set.

It was released theatrically in some countries, so it could mean big screen, too. I bet some people here will screen it via projector
