It's too bad Criterion couldn't include the weird short COUCH on the PUNCH DRUNK LOVE disc.

I'm probably going to have around 200 bucks to spend on Criterion's next week.

I'd bet that it's going to be delivered tomorrow. This has happened to me a few times.

Trying to come up with an all-time top ten list is going to be difficult for me, in fact, nearly impossible, because I really love a great number of films. All I do know, right now, is that Casablanca will be at the very top.

Great list, PB. I think Woody Allen would be the hardest one for me on this list. Manhattan is such a great film. But, I really love Annie Hall, and have a sweet spot in my heart for Mighty Aphrodite. My favorite of those might just depend on my mood.

Scorsese and Kubrick would take some mulling over, too. Raging Bull might just be the best film of the 80s, but do I personally like it better than Taxi Driver or Goodfellas? Tough call. Really tough. And, I've watched The Aviator three times in the last month; I've always loved it, but how I view it in comparison with his other truly great works is slowly changing. I'm thinking it belongs in the discussion with the others I've mentioned. Just a masterful production.

Kubrick...man, I don't know if I could pass over Paths of Glory. If you ask me, it's one of those films that belongs in every single collection, and it's clearly one of the most underappreciated films in the whole Criterion Collection.

The one director I just don't think I could pick a single film from would be Billy Wilder. Not a chance in hell.

1. Woody Allen - Manhattan 1979
2. David Lynch - Mulholland Dr 2001
3. William Friedkin - The Exorcist 1973
4. Steven Spielberg - Jaws 1975
5. Ridley Scott - A Good Year 2005
6. Oliver Stone - JFK 1991
7. Martin Scorcese - Raging Bull 1980

And three directors who are no longer with us, but have provided a top 10 film for me...

8. Alfred Hitchcock - Vertigo 1958
9. Federico Fellini - La Dolce Vita 1960
10. Stanley Kubrick - 2001: A Space Odyssey 1968

Yeah coming up with a top 10 list of all time without any restriction is too hard, it could change anytime.

But I guess based on films I always think about when trying this there has to be at least:

Red
Casablanca
City Lights
Schindler's List
Magnolia
Mulholland Dr.
Metropolis
The Adventures of Robin Hood
Viridiana
It's a Wondeful Life

So in preparation for Dekalog I decided to watch the three earlier films of him on Hulu (actually there are 4 but I've already seen Blind Chance via the CC release).

The Scar After having seen all 8 films of the first Masterpieces of Polish Cinema series, it is quite clear to me a lot of Polish Cinema deals with their politics and censorship in one way or another, in that way this movie reminded me more of those other movies than what I am used with other Kieslowski works, nothing wrong with that but I just find this good not great. (7/10)

Camera Buff While this also deals with similar themes although a bit less overtly political, this really starts to show a more personal side since it deals with the filmmakers struggles directly, I thought this was his early masterpiece, this is no ordinary love letter to cinema kind of movie but it showcases the main character and I assume Kieslowski's own passion for cinema in an excellent way. (9/10)

No End Since the beginning of this we can see this is a kind of turning point, the first that starts to show a supernatural side to the story like in some later works, it is kind of similar to Blue, but there are really two stories with one of them being very political which in a way affected my enjoyment of the other half which was really great. (8/10)

All transfers look pristine, similar to Blind Chance, it looks like they are all ready to be released on blu-ray to me, I don't know what are Criterion plans for them but I really wish they release Camera Buff at least.

Now I just need to watch both A Short Films before starting Dekalog and be Kieslowski complete (kind of since I haven't seen any of his early TV work )

Impossible to list only ten, so here is an off-the-top-of-me-head list that undoubtedly leaves out something important!

Apart from the two top, in no particular order:

Powell & Pressburger - A Canterbury Tale
Miyazaki - My neighbour Totoro
Kubrick- 2001
Wes Anderson - The Life Aquatic
Godard - Contempt
Rohmer - L'Ami de mon ami
Truffaut - Love so many but can't identify one above the others!
Allen - As for Truffaut
Tati - Les Vacances de M. Hulot
Hitchcock- Vertigo
Fellini - 8 1/2
Kurosawa - Stray Dog
Bergman - Wild Strawberries
Coen Bros - The Big Lebowski
Jeunet - A very long engagement
Malick - The Tree of Life

A Very Long Engagement is better than Delicatessen and City of Lost Children? C'mon! and around 2-3 of you nutjobs have said that!

... but actually, it is favourite, not greatest! I did swither about putting in one of those two instead but decided to follow a sentimental urge and put in something that is more lovely if less quirky

I think you'll be in luck. If not a solo release, then I think we'll get an Almodóvar boxset next year from CC.

I lie in that camp too. (Gulp) Although, I've got to admit that Delicatessen is a more essential work. It's pretty much peerless whereas AVLE has many siblings/parents in the World War Weepie genre.

But looking at the cast I can see why others share the opinion: Audrey Tautou and Marion Cotillard.
